United Kingdom election ends in Conservative/DUP alliance

"I think the Conservative party as a whole is reluctant to get rid of Theresa May now because it would mean a leadership election, it would mean stalling on Brexit talks", Menon said.

"In the interests of the country we are willing to form a government, a minority government, and put forward a programme, a Queen's Speech, as well as an alternative Budget and also an alternative program for the Brexit negotiations and then it is up to other parties whether they support us".

The deal sits uneasily with some Conservatives because of the DUP's opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage.

Prime Minister Theresa May, the head of the Conservative Party, will get the first shot at putting together a government.

May's Downing Street office had announced on Saturday that the "principles of an outline agreement" with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) had been agreed, only for the DUP itself to cast doubt on that account hours later.

The fallout from Thursday's snap general election, which left her Conservative Party bereft of their majority, also prompted her to seek out a relatively tiny ally that could have vast sway over what happens next in the United Kingdom.

"I'm afraid we ran a pretty awful campaign", Soubry said.

"I would have thought that's enough to go, actually, and make way for a government that will be truly representative of all of the people of this country".

The DUP backs the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, but on the condition its border with European Union member the Republic of Ireland, remains "frictionless".

One red line is the idea of Northern Ireland being granted some sort of "special status" when Brexit comes to pass.

The chaotic situation won't have long to settle: Formal Brexit negotiations with European Union leaders kick off on June 19.

The news came as Ms May prepared to name the rest of her Cabinet, after revealing on Friday that her five most senior ministers would remain in their posts.

If her government doesn't last the negotiations, which is likely, it would push further chaos as the time limit of the negotiations would be getting shorter and shorter as more mess is created by May.

But another prominent internal critic, former education secretary Nicky Morgan, said Mrs May should "carry on" and was "entitled" to see whether she can form an administration.

When May called the election in April, she did so with the Conservatives riding high in the polls, and the pound had surged on expectations that a big majority for the Conservatives would allow her to face down the so-called euroskeptics in her parliamentary ranks.

The record 56 seats they won in 2015 always looked like it was going to unattainable this time around but not many could have predicted their loss of 21 seats.
