Champions Trophy: Finn replaces injured Woakes

Chris Woakes has spoken of his frustration after suffering a tournament-ending injury in England's Champions Trophy win over Bangladesh. "In the middle patches we couldn't get any wickets and Root and Morgan took the game away from us", he said.

Hosts England started off their ICC Champions Trophy 2017 campaign on a high note as they thrashed Bangladesh by 8 wickets at The Oval on Thursday (June 1).

In Woakes' absence, England's remaining bowlers did enough to limit Bangladesh to an obtainable 305 for 6.

The Victorian was Australia's frontline spinner during their triumphant World Cup campaign in 2015 and for most of the year that preceded it, while he bowled his maximum of 10 overs in three of five matches during Australia's last ODI series in the United Kingdom two years ago.

But England made light work of the target and chased it down with almost three overs and eight wickets to spare.

Hales and Root combined for 159, and if Bangladesh thought they had finally made the breakthrough they was brought back to earth by Morgan, who settled in very quickly.

He and Hales milked the Bangladesh bowlers for all they were worth, barely breaking sweat in the process, a barrage of ones and twos punctuated by the odd drive, cut or pull to the fence.

"Whatever you throw at Joe Root, he proves that he can do it", former England captain Alec Stewart said on the BBC's Test Match Special.

Woakes had gone into the Bangladesh match nursing a tight quad that led to his omission from the final two matches of England's recent ODI series against South Africa, but he seemed back to his best when he opened the tournament with a maiden to Tamim Iqbal.

"It is something we all work on - it is not like a set position that you just bowl through the middle", said Plunkett.

"We ve had our eyes on the Champions Trophy for a while now as a team and we were coming into the tournament in good form. But we couldn't. We lost too many wickets in the late order". The under-pressure opener was caught at short fine leg attempting a ramp shot with just one run to his name.

"But I think we play pretty well in these sort of situations so hopefully we can have a good win on Monday and then a big decider against England (on Saturday)".
