A contract could be finalized as early as this evening or in the morning, according to a source.

He was promoted to assistant coach the next season and stayed in that post until leaving with Todd Lickliter for Iowa in 2007.

Nothing official from the school has said so, but ESPN's Jeff Goodman tweeted late Monday that "Butler has agreed to deal in principle with Milwaukee head coach LaVall Jordan". In his first year as a head coach, the 38-year-old led a piecemeal roster to a 11-24 record and a 4-14 mark in the Horizon League.

Jordan was runner up for the Butler job back in 2013 to Brandon Miller. Terry Johnson has been part of the Butler staff for 12 years, Ryan Pedon was the top recruiter on the Butler staff the past few years and Micah Shrewsberry was an assistant coach for Brad Stevens at Butler and the Boston Celtics.

All told, Jordan was an assistant coach for 13 years before landing the Milwaukee job. "I want to thank President (James) Danko and Barry Collier for the faith they have placed in me to continue The Butler Way and our great success".

"I have so much respect for our young men, our student-athletes that are wearing the jersey and representing Milwaukee with so much pride", Jordan said following the season.

Across the country, LaVall Jordan has a positive reputation both as a coach and as a recruiter.

This will be the fourth time in the last six seasons that Butler has had a new head coach.

For a basketball program that is widely known for keeping it in the family, Jordan checks a lot of boxes. But he led the Panthers to a surprising appearance in the Horizon League Tournament championship, where they had a chance to become the team with the most losses to ever make the NCAA Tournament field.

In 2001, after being selected as the MVP of the Midwestern College Conference Tourney, he helped lead Butler to its first NCAA Tourney win in almost 40 years. He helped the MI program to five NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the 2013 Final Four and national title game - the first for the program in 20 years, followed by a return trip to the Elite Eight in 2014. It is still very possible that one or many assistant coaches could follow Holtmann to Ohio State and recruits can still reopen their recruitment and go elsewhere.
