Kim Jong-un oversees new type of cruise missile

It appears that North Korea's firing of the four anti-ship cruise missiles is a demonstration of its weapons capability, that it can accurately target any ship veering too close to its territory.

On May 14, North Korea fired a rocket that analysts estimate had a range of 4,500 kilometers, putting it within reach of Guam. North Korea fired several projectiles believed to.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce issued a statement Wednesday night lamenting reports that South Korean President Moon Jae-in had halted the partially-installed system's progress until his administration can complete an environmental impact assessment.

Despite its unusually aggressive streak of testing, North Korea still appears mindful not to cross a red line with Washington. The move was immediately condemned by South Korea's president, who warned North Korea that the only thing the country has to gain from unauthorized launches is "isolation and economic difficulties".

"The advancements in the last six months have caused great concern to me and others, in the advancement of and demonstration of technology of ballistic missiles from North Korea".

U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said Thursday the resumption of talks with North Korea on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is made more hard by Pyongyang's increasingly frequent missile tests.

"We assess that North Korea meant to show off its various missile capabilities, display its precise targeting capability, in the form of armed protests against ships in regard to US Navy carrier strike groups and joint naval drills", a South Korean military spokesman explained.

"The launched cruise rockets accurately detected and hit the floating targets on the East Sea of Korea", KCNA said, referring to the Sea of Japan - where two USA aircraft carriers were on naval manoeuvres last week.

Over the years, the North has repeatedly sent drones into South Korea, with the latter failing in some instances to bring them down.

On Thursday, North Korea reported it had successfully tested a new "ground-to-sea cruise rocket" capable of striking enemy battleships staging an attack.

It is not known how many were fired but South Korean national security director Chung Eui-yong claims North Korea launched four short-range missiles from the south east coastal town of Wonsan.

The launch followed the departure of the US aircraft carriers USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan from the region after conducting joint exercises with allies South Korea and Japan. He also warned that North Korea could only face further global isolation and more economic difficulties.

"The drone found this time looks sloppy but slightly more slender than previous ones", a South Korean military official told Reuters on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorized to speak to the media. The father of one of the 12 restaurant workers "died with his eyes open and cursing the conservative elements who have detained his daughter", said Kim.

The missiles are the fourth new system the hermit state has tested this year, sending a defiant message that it will continue to pursue a weapons program that has rattled Washington.
