Study found 1/3 of the world is overweight

Public Health England says that almost two-thirds of the adult population - 63 percent - were overweight or obese in 2015.

Danaei believes that while the epidemic may have plateaued in terms of growth among certain adult populations, such as the USA population, the greater rate of change among children means there will be a future cohort of people who have been exposed to a high BMI for a longer period of time, which researchers will not have faced before.

India has the second highest number of obese children in the world after China, according to an alarming study which found that 14.4 million kids in the country have excess weight.

The largest contributors to weight-related deaths between 1980 and 2015 were heart disease, diabetes, kidney diseases, cancers and musculoskeletal disorders.

An increasing number globally are dying from health problems linked to being overweight, such as cardiovascular disease, said the study, published Monday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Researchers also found that 4 million of the people who died because of a high BMI were not diagnosed as obese.

A BMI score over 25 is overweight, over 30 is obese and over 40 is morbidly obese.

"Those half-serious New Year's resolutions to lose weight should become year-round commitments to lose weight and prevent future weight gain", Murray said.

Relying on estimates from 1,800 data sources, the study's results indicate that the rates of obesity have doubled in 73 of the 195 countries included.

The study was based on the latest data provided by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, which tracks the impact of more than 300 types of pathology and injury in 133 countries. Women were the most likely to be affected by obesity. Egypt topped the list for obese adults at approximately 35 percent.

-China had the largest number of obese children, with 15 million.

In an editorial accompanying the study, Dr. Edward Gregg and Dr. Jonathan Shaw, both epidemiologists at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the most worrisome finding was the approximate tripling of obesity in youth and young adults of middle-income countries - namely China, Brazil, and Indonesia.

"The risk of death and diseases increases as your weight increases", he said.

But these service are expensive and are not now the norm in most low- and middle-income countries.

Some good news is that improvements in medications and other kinds of health-care seem to be helping people survive longer even if they have weight-related health problems.

"Over the past decade, numerous interventions have been evaluated, but very little evidence exists about their long-term effectiveness", said Dr. Ashkan Afshin, assistant professor of global health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, who led the research.

The research was unveiled Monday at the annual EAT Stockholm Food Forum, which brings together scientists, business leaders and policy makers to address ways to transform the global food system to help solve the challenges of climate, sustainable development and health.
