AG Sessions: "This is a Secret Innuendo Being Leaked Out There"

The attorney general vowed to defend his honor "against scurrilous and false allegations", adding that any suggestion about his knowledge of a collusion would be a "detestable and appalling lie".

Independent U.S. Sen. Angus King grilled Sessions over his refusal to discuss whether President Donald Trump had discussed the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the election prior to his decision last month to fire Comey.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is contradicting fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey's testimony about his concerns over a meeting he had with Trump.

Sessions says he was not silent, saying he stressed to Comey the need to be careful about following appropriate policies.

The former Senator from Alabama said his alleged involvement in inappropriate dealings with the Russians was a "lie".

Sessions' absence at other congressional committee hearings is cause for concern and should be grounds for him to resign, said Schumer.

Similarly, he did not answer whether Trump had expressed concern to Sessions about the attorney general's March decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation. He never, he insisted, knew anything about the Russian Federation probe or had any role in it. I'm not able to be rushed this fast.

Instead he maintained that he was "not stonewalling", but "following the historic policies of the Department of Justice".

While no one but Sessions can know his exact motivation for dodging the questions, most of the questions he ducked involved whether or not he had discussed the investigations into Russian Federation and former national security adviser Michael Flynn, or their role in the decision to fire James Comey with the president.

Sessions said he met twice with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, once at last year's Republican National Convention and later in his Senate office, but neither time about Trump's campaign, but rather in his capacity as a US senator at the time before Trump nominated him as the country's top law enforcement official. Days after that, Sessions also corrected his confirmation hearing testimony to inform the committee about the two meetings with Kislyak.

He said Comey never talked with him about the investigation. They are none, Senator Wyden. "What are they?" asked Democratic Senator Ron Wyden. "I have confidence in Mr. Mueller", he said. Ron Wyden aggressively questioned Attorney General Jeff Sessions on just what former FBI Director James Comey thought was "problematic" about Sessions that would ultimately lead to his recusal in the federal Russian Federation probe.

But: When Comey brought it up the next day, Sessions said he agreed it wasn't a good idea to be alone with the president. But I'll say this: "I think your silence, like the silence of Director Coats, like the silence of Admiral Rogers [in reference to June 7's hearings] speaks volumes".

At the same time, Sessions said the USA doesn't have a sufficient strategy to deal with cyberattacks.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified Tuesday that he never told former FBI Director James Comey there were any issues with how the bureau was run before Comey was sacked. "I'm not sure what was in his mind specifically".

Attorney-General Jeff Sessions gave passionate and vehement replies to accusations of collusion with the Kremlin during the presidential election.

The White House has not invoked executive privilege and Sessions, in a novel legal argument, said he was trying to protect Trump in case the president wanted to invoke the privilege at some later point.

But Sessions later conceded it was "conceivable" that he had a conversation with Kislyak at the Mayflower, but it involved "nothing improper". He did allow for the possibility that he encountered him in a reception that he said was attended by a couple dozen people, though he said he had no specific recollection of that.

He's been hounded by speculation over the possibility of a third meeting, with Democratic senators calling for an investigation.

On another issue, Sen Marco Rubio, asked Mr Sessions whether Mr Trump records his conversations in the White House.
