Arena rebuilds US confidence after Klinsmann

A fourth side will enter a playoff against an Asian foe. When qualifying resumes, the usa plays Costa Rica on September 1, most likely in Harrison, New Jersey, then is at Honduras four days later. The Americans have still yet to win a World Cup Qualifier at the majestic Estadio Azteca in their history.

But the visitors continue to show better results here, earning a victory (in a 2012 friendly) and two qualifying draws in the past three visits.

Bradley also had words of praise for United States coach Bruce Arena, who has helped steady the U.S. qualifying campaign since returning to the helm after the sacking of predecessor Jurgen Klinsmann past year.

With a short turnaround between matches and altitude factors, Arena had promised lineup changes. He is only player in USA history to accomplish this feat. Geoff Cameron, one of the Thursday holdovers, was superb in leading a backline that blocked, kicked or headed out most of Mexico's shots and crosses. Arena made seven changes to the starting lineup [that started against Trinidad and Tobago] for the Mexico match at the Azteca; one of the most hard away venues in the world to get a positive result. According to team officials, Howard, the clear-cut No. 1 goalkeeper since Arena's return in December, was not injured.

With seven minutes remaining in the half, Omar Gonzalez missed a header off a corner from Paul Arriola.

The draw leaves Mexico on the brink of World Cup qualification with 14 points, while the United States earned their eighth point in the Hexagonal. Christian Pulisic and Darlington Nagbe provided pace on either flank and Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore were sat up top.

Yet, in Mexico's last two matches, the 27-year-old has been brilliant. Nonetheless, the Americans enjoyed a dream start.

Three minutes later, Bradley almost scored a wonderful second goal, only to be denied by the woodwork. Chicharito saw Vela open on the right side of the pitch and played the ideal pass.

Alertly, he looked up and saw goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa straying off his line. He blasted the ball with is right foot for his second touch from more than 40 yards out.

Now with a little breathing room, look for the national team to try out a few different looks and start determining just what their team will look like and find their form heading into 2018. American players have been harassed by Mexican fans in the past, being pelted with bags of urine, but on Sunday, most American fans were cordoned off in a caged area for their own safety.

Moments later, Mexico were given a chance to score from closer in, but the USA defense was alert to clear a unsafe Hirving Lozano diagonal.

"I'm not very good in a 3-on-3 thing".

With the center backs slow to retreat, Beasley was left to fend for himself. DaMarcus Beasley has played in every Azteca game since Vietnam. Azteca erupted back to life. It is a slog and a struggle, it is not always pretty, but there is only one job that matters and that job is getting done.

Hector Herrera and Bradley both hit the woodwork in the second half as the points were shared on the road to Russian Federation 2018, with Mexico improving to 14 points, six clear of third-placed US after six matches.
