As Comey testimony looms, Trump to push infrastructure plan

President Trump will apparently not try to cite executive privilege in an attempt to block the Russian Federation investigation-related testimony of fired FBI director James Comey, according to two senior Trump administration officials who spoke with the New York Times.

Mr Comey, who was sacked by the U.S. president last month, is set to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee which is probing possible collusion between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

On Friday evening, House Democrats sent a letter to the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, saying there was no case for the president to exert the privilege on Mr. Comey.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Sunday on "Face the Nation" that important elements of President Donald Trump's interactions with former FBI Director James Comey are the tone and "exact words" that were spoken.

"We write to remind you that any such assertion of privilege is nearly certainly baseless, particularly given that Mr. Comey is no longer employed by the Trump Administration", the lawmakers' letter to White House general counsel Don McGahn read. Has the White House cooperated? Despite the report from the Times, Trump could change his mind in the days leading up to Comey's expected testimony.

Don't we, as the American people, deserve the right to know and shouldn't our FBI investigate such claims?

The remarks were the latest in a series of denials from Moscow that have had little impact so far on a political crisis in the United States over potential links between Russian Federation and Trump's inner circle.

Reuters has reported that Flynn and Trump's son-in-law and close adviser, Jared Kushner, discussed with Kislyak the idea of creating a back channel between Trump and Putin that could have bypassed diplomats and intelligence agencies. But that claim would be undercut by the fact that the president has publicly discussed and tweeted about his conversations with Comey, said Rozell. She pointed to a memo written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein criticizing Comey's public statements about the Clinton email server case, which the administration initially used to justify Comey's firing.

"I think Jim Comey deserves to have his, you know, in effect, day in court since the president has disparaged him so much", Warner said.

Trump fired Flynn in February amid questions about whether he inappropriately talked about USA sanctions against Russia with a Russian official and then misled Vice President Pence about it.

During a subsequent Oval Office meeting, Trump asked Comey to drop the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into Flynn, said a person who was given a copy of a memo Comey wrote about the conversation. And yet, we hear of all these memos to the file, all of these dinners and meetings between President Trump and the F.B.I. - the former F.B.I. director.

The White House has also denied that the President asked Comey for a pledge of loyalty shortly after he took office.

Legal experts have said that Mr. Trump's tweets about Mr. Comey would damage any claim of executive privilege.

USA intelligence agencies concluded in January that Moscow tried to tilt the election campaign in Trump's favour, including by hacking into the emails of senior Democrats, a charge the Kremlin denies.

The initial decision to fire Comey presented similar concerns and pitfalls for the administration as the current decision whether or not to try to halt his testimony does.
