Bernie Sanders Congratulates Jeremy Corbyn On UK Election Gains

British Prime Minister Theresa May said she would lead a minority government backed by a small Northern Irish party after she lost an election gamble days before the start of talks on Britain's departure from the European Union.

After noon, May was driven from her official Downing Street residence to Buckingham Palace to ask Queen Elizabeth for permission to form a government - a formality under the British system.

It's unclear what Theresa May's next move will be, but pundits are suggesting she will likely strike a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party, who now hold 10 seats.

"This will allow us to come together as a country and channel our energies towards a successful Brexit deal that works for everyone in this country - securing a new partnership with the European Union which guarantees our long-term prosperity". Almost 13 million people voted for us to do it. That's what we will deliver. Finding support in parliament inconsistent, she made a decision to do a little surprise election of her own.

The biggest victor was Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The results - a sort of turnaround in fortunes for both major parties - have thrown that timetable into doubt.

On a humiliating night for the Prime Minister the Tories slipped from a total of 331 seats to 318, while Labour gained 32 seats to reach 262. Following David Cameron's Brexit debacle on June 23, 2016, this marks the second time in less than a year that an over-confident, Conservative Party leader has been wrongly convinced of the British electorate's readiness to support his or her political mandate. Instead of accepting defeat, however, May claims that she will continue to push for Brexit negotiations.

Labour stunned even its own supporters by winning more parliamentary seats than expected and, although it lost the election, its performance was widely seen as a moral victory for Corbyn.

Voters failed to give a ringing endorsement to May's plan for Brexit, which involves leaving the EU's single market and imposing restrictions on immigration while trying to negotiate free trade deal with the bloc.

May also reappointed an old adversary - Michael Gove, a former rival for the Conservative leadership whom May fired from the Cabinet when she took office previous year.

"We don't know when Brexit talks start". Barnier tweeted the talks should begin only when the United Kingdom is "ready". "Whatever the results, the Conservative party will remain the party of stability". Its cartoon depicted May in a coffin with her feet sticking out and a speech bubble saying "Nothing has changed", a line she repeated several times as she reversed a key policy on social care during the campaign. "I was kind of hoping it would just go the way that the polls suggested it would and we could have a quiet life in Westminster but now it's going to be a bit of a mess".

Thinking she could solidify her majority, she held a snap election this week-but the public that had voted for Brexit turned on her and took away the Conservatives' majority in Parliament.

Davidson was one of the few Conservative success stories in the election as the Scottish wing of the party won 13 seats in Scotland.
