Comey says Trump's lying, Trump says Comey's lying

Mr. Comey became the subject of discussion in Washington over his testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee last week over Russian interference during the 2016 election.

Iohannis offered support for Trump's position Friday, saying to Trump, "I'm very glad that due to your strong leadership North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chose to go against terrorism". Comey tried to explain that the investigation of Clinton's emails was finished whereas the investigation of Trump's campaign is ongoing.

Comey said that because his writings were unclassified, he felt he could share them with the media.

And it comes a day after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a letter that he would be appearing before the committee on Tuesday to answer questions raised by Comey's recent testimony.

The Russia issue has cast a shadow over the early months of Mr Trump's presidency.

Though some are privately concerned, and frustration is regularly voiced about the president's undisciplined administration and the distractions he creates, Republicans have scant incentive to abandon him now. Trump's signature remains key to the still-nascent GOP agenda, and he has the ability to appoint judges to lifetime appointments, a thrilling prospect for conservatives.

Thus, the events, while not leaving Mr Trump unscathed, did little to shake him. Ryan defended Trump by saying that he is "just new to this".

Mr. Trump was alluding to conversations that Comey wrote about in a memo released following his termination, alleging the president had pressured him to drop the FBI investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

In his many memorialized meetings, Comey never really challenged Trump directly on these requests. But we were very, very happy and, frankly, James Comey confirmed a lot of what I said.

"I would be glad to tell him exactly what I told you", Trump said. "He said that he wasn't under investigation and indeed that was verified".

Comey also made clear that political entanglement in law enforcement has cut across party lines. John Cornyn of Texas, who sits on the intelligence committee.

As Mr Comey detailed what he clearly saw as the President's attempts to influence him, and condemned Mr Trump's "lies" about the Federal Bureau of Investigation during Thursday's hearing, the President was uncharacteristically silent on Twitter.

When Trump asked him to drop the Flynn investigation, Comey demurred and simply agreed Flynn was a "good guy".

Three months later, with no warning, Comey was summarily dismissed.

The Tucson Weekly published quotes from what it said was a private talk by GOP Rep. Martha McSally of Arizona to the Arizona Bankers Association last week.

Comey's memos about his meetings with Trump are now in Mueller's hands. "You're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry".
