Corbyn looks forward to May's 'coalition of chaos'

Labour secured 262 MPs at the June 8 General Election, up from the 232 elected in 2015 while Ed Miliband was leader.

Jeremy Corbyn was pictured joining a children's football training session in Islington as one of his MPs said Labour missed an "open goal" to beat Theresa May and the Tories in the General Election.

Urging MPs to maintain "unity and collective discipline", he said Labour must act as a "government in waiting".

The Labour leader added that he would be focusing on the marginal seats required for the Labour Party to gain a majority, and accused Ms May of putting together a government that is "far from strong and stable".

Nevertheless, the party still ended up with 56 fewer seats than the Conservatives, who are seeking to form a minority government with the Democratic Unionists.

Mr Corbyn was greeted with cheers and a long standing ovation as he arrived at the first meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party since the Conservatives lost their Commons majority, in marked contrast to the hard meetings he had with his critics in the party prior to the election.

"Just as, if we'd have lost seats under his leadership, he would have had to take responsibility, we've gained seats under his leadership, and he can take the credit for that". We must remain in permanent campaign mode on a general election footing.

Theresa May has no mandate to govern, he suggested, and her administration is "on notice from voters".

Corbyn - whose Labour Party on Thursday night defied the polls and all expectations to gain 30 seats and force a hung parliament as a result - was welcomed to Parliament by the applause and cheers of Labour MPs.

Mr Corbyn is expected to reshuffle his shadow cabinet in the coming days with several senior figures who called for him to step down a year ago after the European Union referendum hinting they are open to a return.
