Court: UK baby must remain on life support for 6 more days

Judges in the European Court of Human Rights have ordered doctors to keep treating Charlie Gard for another six days while they consider the case.

The parents of 10-month-old Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic condition, want him to be treated with a trial therapy called nucleoside in the US.

The European Court of Human Rights is now considering the case.

Today the Strasbourg judges said that doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London should keep treating Charlie until midnight, June 19.

Back in April, Yates and Gard were told by a judge at the High Court that Charlie's life support machine must be turned off, however the couple appealed that decision. Mr Justice Francis concluded that life-support treatment should end and that Charlie should be allowed to die with dignity. Charlie's life support, they say, should be stopped.

The Guardian reported that three court of appeal judges upheld the decision in May, and three supreme court justices dismissed the parents' latest challenge on Thursday, following a hearing in London.

According to the Mirror, a ruling issued by the European Court of Human Rights would be binding on the United Kingdom government, rather than Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Judges are expected to make an announcement later on Tuesday.

Charlie Gard was born with a form of mitochondrial disease, a condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage.

They just want doctors to keep their son alive by artificial means until they can take him to the USA for the new therapy which, they hope, might result in some improvement of his condition.

Charlie's parents, who are in their 30s, have appealed for money on a GoFundMe page to cover doctors' bills in America. It reached a £1.2m target before the high court trial.

More than 80,000 people have also contributed to a crowd-funding campaign, with donations exceeding the £1.3 million ($1.65 million) required for the treatment.

Mr Justice Francis said Great Ormond Street doctors had considered the experimental treatment, but decided it would not help Charlie.

Papers filed by the couples' lawyers have said they should be allowed to make any decisions about Charlie's treatment, unless it might pose harm to him.

Medical law expert Professor Penney Lewis said that under English law, the paramount consideration was what was in the child's best interest.
