Dembele scores winner as 10-man France beat England 3-2

France were forced to play a man light for the vast majority of the second period following the dismissal of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane but conjured victory through an Ousmane Dembele victor 12 minutes from time. "There is no point not having a look at some players, and putting them into the environment you want to test them in", said Southgate.

There was a brisk response from France, Giroud producing one of his more elegant volleyed finishes into the top corner only to be denied by an offside flag.

Having so impressively hauled themselves into a lead, France switched off foolishly to hand the onus back to England early in the second period.

Despite looking sloppy at times, England played well in patches and got themselves level soon after the restart.

On the pitch, Kane's seventh England goal came after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's diagonal sphere was grabbed by Raheem Sterling, whose creative back-heel enabled Ryan Bertrand to centre for the Tottenham striker.

England had actually taken the lead at the Stade de France when Kane scored after only eight minutes.

"We've got to find a way to win, especially when they were down to 10 men". Dembele and Kylian Mbappe had chances to fire their country in front, but Didier Deschamps' men took the lead just before the interval thanks to another defender.

The equaliser did arrive midway through the first half when Olivier Giroud's downward header was clawed away by Tom Heaton, but the England goalkeeper - making his full debut for his country - could only push it into the path of Umtiti, who converted the rebound.

Dembele lined himself up for a curler that Heaton parried. France then struck again, with Dembele dribbling into the area and attempting to bend his shot beyond Heaton only for him to push the ball out.

England were breached a second time when they were hit on the break just before half-time as Dembele burst forward.

Mbappe's awareness and movement were astonishing for a player of his age.

In one second-half moment, Dembele flicked the ball past Kyle Walker - hardly a slouch himself - and left him trailing as he embarked on a dazzling 60-meter run.

Southgate had with mixed feelings.

"We scored a goal with 10 men against a good England side, which is quite an achievement", Deschamps told a news conference.

"I think both players had some really good moments and it's hard to assess without watching it back, but I thought there were definitely positive individual performances", he added.

On a frustrating night: "We should have got a result".

"It is hard on Fraser, who is also a very good goalkeeper, but with those four and (Sunderland's) Jordan Pickford and then a couple of lads coming up potentially from the Championship next year, we are very healthy".

"With Spain it was their ability to keep the ball better than us, and we were chasing, chasing, chasing".
