Donald Trump invited to testify over James Comey, Russian meddling

Al Franken and Patrick Leahy - who initially pressed Sessions in his confirmation hearings on Russian contacts - wrote to Comey seeking an investigation into whether Sessions perjured himself when he said he had no contacts.

"If it's true, why did the attorney general offer his resignation to the president?" Susan Collins, R-Maine, a member of the intelligence committee, referring to the existence of any recordings.

Comey is unlikely to play any sort of direct role in the investigation now led by special counsel Robert Mueller, his predecessor as FBI director.

Spicer told reporters Monday that it "depends on the scope of the questions" and said it was "premature" to say.

It was a sign of escalating fallout from riveting testimony from Comey last week of undue pressure from Trump, which drew an angry response from the president on Friday that Comey was lying. So it is a new game, even if Republicans keep trying to play the old one. Multiple sources confirmed that the president was disappointed with the attorney general's recusal - a decision Trump only learned about minutes before it was announced in March. A Justice Department spokeswoman tells NPR that Sessions requested it be public.

Sessions was originally scheduled to testify Tuesday about the Justice Department budget before the Senate and House appropriations subcommittees.

Feinstein, who used to chair the Senate Intelligence Committee and is the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, tossed a curveball back at the attorney general, arguing he should testify publicly before the seasoned lawyers and prosecutors of the Judiciary Committee.

He also said James Comey had enjoyed his recent testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee, in which Comey accused the Trump administration of defaming him and told his former Federal Bureau of Investigation colleagues: "I am so sorry that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to you properly".

Separately, Senate Republicans and Democrats reached agreement late Monday on a new package of sanctions against Russian Federation.

Senator Ron Wyden of OR, a Democrat who also sits on that panel, said the American public had the right to hear the attorney general's answers. Comey testified in public and then met with the committee in a closed session to discuss matters touching on classified information.

"He likes to bring people up to date on what he's done", Comey's father said.

President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka, says her father felt "vindicated" and "incredibly optimistic" following fired FBI Director James Comey's congressional testimony last week. In one note, Comey says Trump cleared the room before encouraging Comey to end an investigation into Trump's national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

The first, arguing that Comey is a compromised witness and individual: "I believe the James Comey leaks will be far more prevalent than anyone ever thought possible". "'He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go".

Sessions has been dogged by questions about possible additional encounters with the ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.

"If Jeff Sessions refuses to answer questions tomorrow, he's going to refuse to answer questions tomorrow", Toobin said.

"I have a recollection of him just kind of looking at me", Comey testified. "He didn't say anything".

Yesterday, Schumer also said he would like to clear up the matter of whether Trump does indeed have tapes of his conversations with Comey, as the president has suggested.

On Wednesday last week, the heads of the top intelligence agencies and the deputy attorney general declined to answer key questions for various reasons. He arrived in the job in February eager to launch ambitious efforts to combat violent crime and deport undocumented immigrants.

Comey testified that the FBI investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign did not extend to Trump himself during the time Comey was leading the FBI.
