Donald Trump now thinks Trumpcare is too 'mean'

Senators are working on crafting legislation to replace Obama's signature domestic legislation

Senators are working on crafting legislation to replace Obama's signature domestic legislation

Weeks after House Republicans passed a health care bill, GOP senators are drafting their own version of a law that would repeal and replace Obamacare.

In a rebuke of the House bill, congressional sources told the AP that Trump said to 15 GOP Senators over lunch on Tuesday that he wants their legislation to be "more generous".

Trump's remarks were a surprising critique of a Republican-written House measure whose passage he lobbied for and praised.

His call for more funding, though, could make it more hard to sell the bill to House Republicans, who will meet with senators after a bill passes the Senate to reconcile the differences between the two legislative bodies.

There are also more reports of a revolt taking place among conservative senators as the bill appears to tilt more towards the moderates.

President Donald Trump speaks before having lunch with Republican Senators and White House staffers in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington, Tuesday, June 13, 2017. They spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal a closed-door conversation.

Trump will likely accept whatever they come up with - "Pretty obviously (he's) not a details guy", one Republican aide said - but will eventually be called on to help rally support for the final product.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), who is pushing the Senate to slow the repeal of Medicaid expansion, indicated Trump is concerned about the people who are enrolled in the program for low-income Americans.

The secrecy surrounding the current process has fired up Democrats, who for seven years faced criticism from Republicans for the way in which they crafted the initial health care overhaul legislation in 2009 - even though Democrats conducted scores of public hearings and markups of their legislation.

"We aren't stupid", an anonymous Republican Senate staffer told the website Axios.

"Across America, premiums are skyrocketing, insurers are fleeing and the American people are paying much more for much worse coverage", President Donald Trump said recently in Cincinnati. But in a May 28 tweet that raised questions about his intent, he said: "I suggest that we add more dollars to Healthcare and make it the best anywhere".

Two of those lawmakers hail from OH, which, through the state's ACA expansion, has enrolled more than 500,000 new Medicaid recipients who have behavioral-health needs, including those with drug addiction and different mental-health disorders.

Senate Republican leaders reportedly hope to move some form of health care legislation out of the upper chamber before the July 4 recess, according to Business Insider.

"It might be that McConnell knows he can't get to 50 so he's going as far left as possible to give moderates cover when they do vote for this bill", one conservative Senate aide said.

"No matter how good it is, we will get no obstructionist Democrat votes", Trump said after landing in the state for an event.

Trump later told reporters that the Senate is poised to release a "phenomenal bill", and signaled that it could included a broader budget for federal spending on healthcare.
