Donald Trump urged to come clean over alleged James Comey recordings

During more than two hours of testimony, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee he believed Trump had directed him in February to drop an FBI probe into the Republican president's former national security adviser Michael Flynn as part of the broader Russian Federation investigation.

Comey admitted he leaked the information as part of the FBI's probe into Russia's involvement in us elections and the connections of the president's former national security adviser Michael Flynn with Russian officials.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday accused James Comey of cowardice by leaking accounts of his meetings with the president, days after the ex-FBI director testified that Trump sought to derail the Russian probe.

Asked if he was willing to give his side of the story, Mr Trump replied: "100 per cent".

Mr Comey told the Senate intelligence committee on Thursday about several one-on-one interactions with the president, during which he said Mr Trump pressed him to show "loyalty".

"No collusion, no obstruction, he's a leaker, but we want to get back to running our great country", the president responded. The White House later redacted that reason entirely.

Days after he fired Mr Comey on 9 May, Mr Trump tweeted: "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

On Friday, Trump called the testimony a "total and complete vindication" of him. "There's no ambiguity in it", Trump Jr. said on Fox News" "Justice with Judge Jeanine". President Trump's picking and choosing which parts of James Comey's testimony he says are true, and which are false.

Norm Eisen, who was special counsel for ethics in the Obama White House, said on Twitter the complaint was an "abuse of process" and that he and others would be filing a defense of Comey.

He also admitted that he talked to Trump on numerous occasions after that alleged request and that Trump never asked him about it again.

Meanwhile, the House Intelligence Committee is formally asking the White House whether it possesses any "recordings or memoranda" of Trump's conversations with Comey. "I'm not going to say 'I want you to pledge allegiance.' Who would do that?".

"Those were lies, plain and simple", Mr Comey said in his opening remarks ahead of the three-hour inquiry.

Mr Comey also said the president defamed him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation by claiming the agency was "poorly led", which Mr Comey called "lies, plain and simple".

"WOW, Mr Comey is a leaker!"

During a news conference Friday, Trump said he'd have more information related to whether tapes exist at a later date.

Richman confirmed Thursday that he was the friend Comey testified who had discussed the memos with the press.
