DUP leader: 'Difficult' for Theresa May to remain Prime Minister

"Between 1982 and 1984 I worked as Enoch Powell's constituency agent, successfully spearheading Mr. Powell's election campaigns of 1983 and 1986 when the South Down seat was retained despite the fact the constituency contained a natural "nationalist" majority".

DUP leader Arlene Foster has told Gerry Adams's party that if it is concerned about her moves to enter a "confidence and supply" arrangement with the UK Conservatives, it should help to quickly re-establish the Assembly.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has just one week until Brexit negotiations are supposed to begin. We are meeting with the two governments and all the parties this afternoon.

In the case of Northern Ireland's history, it is worth remembering that the Nationalist/Republican/Catholic community there has had to deal with, at best, naked sectarianism and discrimination and, at worst, various forms of violence directed towards it since 1922.

Talks to restore the power-sharing Executive in Northern Ireland are to continue today, 12 June.

The DUP leader is nearly certain to ask for greater investment in Northern Ireland as the price of a deal.

On the other side of the coin, the closer one looks at the DUP, the more obvious it becomes that they can not be seen simply as a Unionist counterpart to the Nationalist/Republican parties.

The party - led by Michelle O'Neill in Northern Ireland - have occupied offices in Westminster since 2002 but its MPs have never taken up their seats in the House of Commons. Although opposite the DUP with regard to the constitutional question, they are not necessarily always so in terms of being socially progressive. The DUP has also made a special effort to block marriage equality for the province.

Major's warning comes amid ongoing political turmoil in Northern Ireland.

At home, the liberal wing of her own party has shown discomfort surrounding the deal, Ed Vaizey has expressed he would challenge any anti-LGBT rhetoric, Heidi Allen said publicly that she does not think Theresa May will last 6 months and Anna Soubry calling her position untenable.

The ancient Irish foes look set to bring their beef into the heart of British politics as the DUP argue the price of joining the Tories in an alliance would be to hit Sinn Fein funding.

"The former finance minister Sammy Wilson has said: "...we are already paying through the nose for electricity because we go down the route of the dearest electricity possible through renewable energy" and are "putting our agricultural industry in jeopardy because there is no greater producer of greenhouse gases than cows".

"The UK government will do everything in its power, working alongside the Irish government in relation to those areas where they have responsibility, to contribute to and support the process, steadfastly upholding the principles of the Belfast Agreement and its successors".

Major said London's impartial role in Northern Ireland remained a fundamental part of the peace process.

The Northern Ireland Executive has not sat since the election on March 2.
