Researchers Indicate French Fries May Kill You

Unfortunately, the results of an eight-year study have discovered that regularly eating French fries may actually be responsible for numerous early deaths. Or do they also consume larger quantities of added sugar and cholesterol?

Of the 4,440 people who participated in the study, 236 participants died by the end of the eight-year follow up. According to PEOPLE, a new report from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that not only are French fries unhealthy (kind of a no-brainer for anything soaked in oil and salt), but they may also be linked to a higher rate of death.

As with most things, eating in moderation is the general rule of thumb. They kept a track of how often the participants ate fried and unfried potatoes during the course of the study. Therefore, participants who ate boiled or grilled potatoes did not face any health risks. But, it is the way you cook and consume them that makes all the difference.

Baked potatoes might not be as bad for you as french fries
Potatoes that aren’t fried may not be as harmful

And those who ate a form of fried potato twice a week or more were twice as likely to have passed away. It does not suggest that they can, by themselves, cause death.

So, although it may be common sense that fried potatoes aren't healthy maybe you'll think twice before substituting your mash for fries the next time you eat out!

If a serving of hot, crispy fries is your idea of the ultimate "cheat day" snack, you may be putting your health a risk. Mix some olive oil, sea salt and pepper and rub it all over the fries before you bake them in the oven. Unfried white potatoes are a relatively healthy food because they contain a good amount of fiber, vitamins and micronutrients, the study authors write, which "could have counterbalanced the detrimental effects of their high glycemic index".
