Eskom board chairman Ben Ngubane resigns

"Dr Ben Ngubane has resigned with immediate effect as non-executive director and chairperson of the board of Eskom".

"Ngubane formally tendered his resignation, which I accepted", public enterprises minister Lynne Brown said in the statement sent in a text message by spokesman Colin Cruywagen.

Brown made the announcement late on Monday night adding that Zethembe Khoza would take over as acting chairman until new appointments could be presented to cabinet for approval. We did not have a moment with colleagues to reflect. The board was very shocked.

Meanwhile, Eskom's Annual General Meeting is scheduled to take place later this month. "I think this put him in an impossible and complex situation that basically he would rather be without", Peter Attard Montalto, an analyst at Nomura International in London, said in a note.

Molefe originally left after the Public Protector raised questions over coal deals between Eskom and a company controlled by the controversial Gupta family, who are wealthy businessmen and friends of President Zuma and employ his son, Duduzane.

"Ngubane's resignation will not exonerate him from liability for the breakdown of governance at the power utility, and the DA will use the Parliamentary Inquiry into Eskom, set to commence on June 21, to hold Ngubane to account", said DA spokeswoman on public enterprises, Natasha Mazzone.

"The Molefe saga demonstrated very clearly that the board and the ministry are in a state of chaos".

The National Union of Mineworkers welcomed Ngubane's resignation and called on the utility's remaining board members to also step down.
