For Donald Trump, the 'cloud' just grew that much darker

What Comey's statement says: He alleges Mr Trump asked him to drop investigation into then-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

President Trump's claims contradicting former FBI Director James Comey's testimony about their conversations faced fresh scrutiny Sunday, with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle putting pressure on the commander in chief to offer proof of his charges. And in a February 14 Oval Office meeting, Comey says that Trump asked him to find a way to end an investigation into Flynn, who had been fired the day before for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Russia's ambassador.

The former FBI director also appeared to confirm Trump's statements that, on three occasions, Comey told the president he was not personally under investigation with regard to Russian Federation. Trump's personal attorney, Marc E Kasowit, said the president was "eager to continue moving forward with his agenda, with the business of this country, and with the public cloud removed".

"That's what he told Comey", Trump Jr. told host and former NY district attorney and judge Jeanie Pirro, a longtime friend of the Trump family.

"I'll tell you about [it] over a fairly short period of time", he said. "I woke up in the middle of the night on Monday, because it did not dawn on me originally that there might be corroboration for our conversations, there might be a tape, and my judgment was, I needed to get that out into the public square". He also indicated multiple times that he believed that as part of his probe, Mueller is investigating whether or not any obstruction of justice took place after the initial federal investigation into Russian Federation meddling began.

Other key moments include the "tapes" tweet, and a tweet accusing President Obama of ordering an illegal wiretap of Trump Tower during the presidential campaign.

Comey admitted to the leak during Senate testimony last week.

"I believe the James Comey leaks will be far more prevalent than anyone ever thought possible", Trump wrote in an early morning tweet. Pressed on the issue, he said the media would be "disappointed" when he revealed the answer.

What the Trump administration said: Mr Trump said he was told by the director "on three separate occasions" that he was not being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In the event that they don't, Trump could likely clear the air and take some pressure off by simply saying so, and offering even a modest explanation, or an apology for suggesting they did.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has formally requested copies of former FBI Director James Comey's memos from his friend Daniel Richman, a Columbia University Law School professor, ABC News has learned.
