Freshman football player dies after morning workout

Kent State has not yet confirmed Heintz' death.

The Kenton High School football Twitter account posted Tuesday afternoon that it was "shocked and bewildered" after learning of Heintz's death.

DePerro said Heintz' body has been transferred to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office, where an autopsy was scheduled to be completed Wednesday.

"The Kent State University family mourns the tragic loss of one of our student-athletes, freshman football player Tyler Heintz", the school's statement says.

Heintz, an offensive lineman, was taken to a local hospital after conditioning drills this morning. Tyler was recruited as a rising star on our offensive line. According to the Record Courier, DePerro said the autopsy's conclusion may not arrive for several weeks. He helped lead Kenton High School to two state semifinals appearances, and earned second team All-Western Buckeye League honors in 2016.

The coroners office said it was too soon to determine a cause of death.

Heintz's passing was also reported by WKTN Radio in Kenton.

This is the second time in recent years a Kent State football player has died.

At 9:20 p.m. Kent State's communications and marketing department did release a brief statement.

Heartbroken parent Ronnie Reed tweeted out "Heartbreaking!" I'm blessed to have had him as a friend. Don't take it for granted.
