Golden State Warriors beat Cleveland Cavaliers to clinch NBA title

The Cavs narrowed the gap slightly in the third but the Warriors were able to keep their opponents at arm's length to wrap up a second title in three years. The Warriors claimed the title in 2015, before it changed hands to the Cavaliers previous year.

Durant - drafted as second-overall pick by the Seattle SuperSonics in 2007 - was an easy choice for the Finals MVP. But the Warriors bench has been the difference through three quarters.

"I couldn't be more proud of that guy", said Irving, who had 26 points in the loss. From about the 10-minute mark in the second quarter up to halftime, Golden State went on a plus-20 run. But James himself won't be playing for awhile. He proved that in Game 5. Here is a transcript of what J.R. Smith said following the game, compiled by the National Basketball Association.

He made a seventh when the game was already in hand for the Warriors, giving him a total of 25 points on the night.

The Warrirors had their own foul trouble issues early on to deal with as three starters - Thompson, Green and Durant all finished the half with two. Cleveland's subs have scored just two points. Assists-Cleveland 22 (James 8), Golden State 27 (Curry 10).

But James, in his seventh consecutive playoff series and eighth overall, fell to 3-5 in the championship round. We got behind the eight ball and they came out and played the way they were supposed to play all year.

Kevin Love is scoreless for the Cavs, who have turned it over 11 times. It was Smith's best game of the season by far. With the addition of Durant, the Warriors found enough ammunition to hold off James.

James didn't elaborate, but it would seem a wholesale evaluation of the Cavaliers is in store given how dominant the Warriors were during their 16-1 postseason run. LeBron and Irving each with a dozen.

Golden State shot 14 free throws in the first quarter to Cleveland's seven. To be back here, bring ol' Larry back home, I'm just excited to do something special.

Kyrie Irving scored off of a steal and then LeBron James picked off the inbound pass and converted another layup for a 13-9 lead.

James has hit 5 of 6 shots in a torrid start for Cleveland. We were down 3-1.

Give the Cavaliers full credit.

But unlike last year's comeback when they took advantage of Harrison Barnes' offensive struggles, Durant answered every charge during a 39-point night and Cleveland will need to find new answers if these teams meet in a fourth straight Finals next season. ". Getting that first championship for me was like having my first son". "He's had an awesome career, but he just took it to the next level", coach Steve Kerr said.

They better be after their Game 4 flop in Cleveland.

"We have to be more on edge. Five games didn't do it justice, just for how competitive it was", Kerr said. "He felt like he needed to reassemble and reassess his career and come here". "We were really good tonight".

"We had a moment", Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said.

"Appropriate fear", a stone-faced Lue said. And throughout the Finals, it often looked as though they were listening to him. For the other team that participated in the Finals, along with the other 28 teams in the league, the offseason will be a time to try and figure out how the hell you're supposed to beat the Warriors.
