Google poaches key Apple engineer to lead mobile chip development for Pixel

It's no secret that Apple's A series chips are exceptional performers.

Google has bigger plans though. We may be looking at the beginning of an Android performance revolution in the works!

The landscape changed with the launch of the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL as Google now wanted to take greater control of hardware.

"The Pixel is seen as Google's answer to the iPhone, but considering Apple sells 40 to 50 million iPhones in a quarter, Google has some catching up to do", according to Ars Technica, a tech website.

The Google Pixel.Hollis Johnson/Business InsiderIn a sign that it may consider building custom chips for its growing lineup of hardware devices, Google has poached an employee from Apple's chip-making division.

Just like the Pixel phones, Google's chip (s) will be designed how they want and how it should work with Android. Gulati gives Google the knowledge to build its own parts, which will save the company money in the long run. In a significant move, the company has now hired a Lead SoC Architect who most recently led Apple's silicon development. "Some of these filings describe fundamental chip architecture, while others are more specific to certain applications". While Google may design the chips though, it will still need to pay a fabricator to make them, like Samsung or TSMC. And from the looks of things, the Pixels will be more tightly controlled and integrated than ever.
