One final push secured a famous win for the Highlanders, pipping the British and Irish Lions 23-22 in a thriller in Dunedin.

Hogg, who also toured Australia four years ago but did not play in any of the Tests, featured in this year's tour opener against the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians as well as against the Crusaders.

Tommy Seymour gets the second half going with a try for the Lions.

Jonathan Joseph, Tommy Seymour and captain Sam Warburton all ran in tries for the often-threatening Lions, but the tourists were undone late on at the coal face.

Despite seven players being unavailable due to New Zealand and Maori All Blacks commitments, hooker Liam Coltman, flyhalf Lima Sopoaga and winger Waisake Naholo were all included in coach Tony Brown's starting side named on Sunday.

After Warburton scored, the Lions had a healthy lead but they lost concentration on the re-start with Jared Payne dropping the ball.

It only took the Lions two minutes into the second half to score their second try of the game when Seymour brilliantly read a cross-field kick from Sopoaga and jumped ahead of Malakai Fekitoa to pluck the ball in the air and race away from 45 metres.

After being on attack, the Highlanders turned over the ball inside the Lions 22 before registering a monster scrum which forced the penalty and enabled Marty Banks to slot it on a tidy angle. Lions vs Highlanders: When does it kick-off, what TV channel is it on and where is it being played?

"We gave away too much possession at the breakdown, our first and second arrivals weren't there quick enough and that's something we spoke about during the game", Warburton said.

The same couldn't be said of Banks who rewarded his pack for a monster penalty scrum by putting his side in front again. That allowed them to put us under pressure and score from that.

The last Lions miss was a 58m shot from reserve fullback Elliot Daly two minutes from time, whose attempted match-winner fell just short. Sopoaga landed another penalty before Warburton's try, from a concerted build-up in which Joseph handled twice, seemed to have clinched the game for the Lions who led by nine points.

Coach Warren Gatland said Hogg's departure was "hugely disappointing".
