How To Watch Jeff Sessions Testify On The Hill From Your Desk

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday denounced as "an appalling and detestable lie" the idea he colluded with Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign but refused to answer a series of questions during a high-stakes Senate hearing.

Sessions: "There are none, Senator Wyden".

Mr Comey recalled that he felt "something big" was about to happen, and "my sense was the attorney general knew he shouldn't be leaving".

Towards the end of his opening statement, Sessions said that President Trump's agenda is to improve the lives of the American people, and that he shares that agenda with the president. "With respect to this subject, only the President or his attorneys are authorized to comment". But Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation in March after the revelations of the two Kislyak meetings.

In March, Sessions recused himself from any probes related to Russian interference in the 2016 election. He acknowledged being at the event and said he had conversations with those there, but did not remember any with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

It will be the first sworn public testimony from Mr Sessions, a long time former senator, since he was confirmed as the nation's top law enforcement officer in February, and comes as political intrigue pulses through the United States capital following explosive testimony by Mr Comey last week. While Comey did not run to tell Sessions of his concerns over what the President supposedly said about the investigation of Michael Flynn, Comey did say he asked Sessions to shield him from Mr. Trump, anxious by the President's phone calls and questions. "I was taken aback by these explosive allegations".

Sessions dodged questions about were whether he had discussed Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey's handling of the FBI's Russian Federation probe with Trump before the president fired Comey on May 9.

He said Comey's decision to announce the results of the investigation without Justice Department approval was "a stunning development" because "the FBI is the investigative team".

Rosenstein repeatedly conveyed his support for Mueller's role at a Senate hearing, held the morning after a close friend of President Donald Trump was quoted in a television interview as saying he was considering dismissing Mueller.

And if Sessions was involved with that decision, in what other ways might he have continued to be involved with the Russian Federation inquiry even after announcing that he wouldn't take part?

Sessions had been scheduled to appear Tuesday before the Senate Appropriations Committee to review funding for the Justice Department, which he heads.

Comey said he asked the attorney general to try to prevent future one-on-one meetings with Trump but that Sessions did not respond. Ruddy never spoke to the President regarding this issue. "But I'm asking you sir", Warner said.

"I am not claiming executive privilege because that is the president's power, and I do not have the power to claim executive privilege". "The documentation, what little I received, was mostly already in the media and was presented by the senior ethics public responsibility attorney in the department".

He also had prior conversations with Comey, who testified last week that, following a February 14 meeting with Trump, he told Sessions that he never again wanted to be left alone with the president. Did he do anything after being asked by Comey? Gen. Jeff Sessions and his role in Comey's firing, the Russian Federation investigation and other issues.

"I think it depends on the scope of the questions", Spicer said.

Risch said, "Mr. Comey told us, when he was here last week, that he had very specific recollections, in fact he chased it down through the intelligence community and was not able to find a scintilla of evidence to that effect". Don't leave us alone like that.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican, told reporters on Tuesday he had heard only rumors about Mueller, but said, "The best advice would be to let Robert Mueller do his job". Comey has testified that Trump then asked him to drop a criminal investigation of former national security advisor Michael Flynn. "When you're recusing yourself, you are stepping aside and this sure doesn't look like it", Wyden said, referring to Sessions' involvement in the firing letters to Comey. Comey responded, "That's a question I can't answer". The Justice Department has denied that, saying Sessions stressed to Comey the need to be careful about following appropriate policies.
