Indyref2 plans a factor in SNP election result, Nicola Sturgeon admits

The SNP saw its vote drop by 13 percentage points on Thursday, a drubbing that handed 12 seats to the Tories, six to Labour and three to the Liberal Democrats.

A dramatic night in politics delivered a devastating blow to the Scottish National Party, threatening its plans to offer Scotland a second independence referendum.

In comparison, the party secured 50% of the vote and secured 56 MPs in the 2015 general election.

The SNP remains Scotland's biggest party Despite the punishing losses, including former first minister Alex Salmond as well as the party's current deputy leader Angus Robertson failing to win seats.

Earlier, Douglas Ross of the Tories overturned a majority of 9,065 to defeat Mr Robertson - who had been the SNP's leader at Westminster - by 4,200 votes in Moray.

She may yet prove key to chosing a new leader to replace the party's nationwide leader, Prime Minister Theresa May, whose future is now in question.

But at the following year's Holyrood election, independence exploded back on to the agenda as the SNP secured re-election on a manifesto pledge that Scotland should have the right to hold another referendum if it was dragged out of the European Union against its will.

As group leader at Westminster, and as a result of the SNP's newly acquired third-party status, he was handed the task of challenging the UK Government on everything from welfare reforms to Brexit and foreign affairs.

"We have heard the First Minister say she will "reflect" on the matter.

But it would be the wrong thing for me to do at this hour to take decisions before having had the opportunity to properly think about it", she said.

"What we've got is a crushing result for the SNP, they've lost 20 seats if not more and further than that they've watched their majorities crumble".

Labour gained a number of seats back from the SNP, with the party making a return to winning ways in Scotland's largest city as they took Glasgow North East from Anne McLaughlin.

"This, they said, was the issue raised on the doorsteps of Scotland more often than all other issues combined".

The Times writes that "throughout the campaign the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats insisted that their voters were appalled by the prospect of a second independence referendum".

Glassey said the leader of the SNP, Nicola Sturgeon, pressing the issue of independence in the run-up to the election showed she was out of touch. A majority of Scottish voters (still) don't want to secede from the United Kingdom, despite them voting to remain in the European Union past year when the majority of people in England and Wales opted to get out.

"I can only put that down to how he felt in the run up to the election, what he was hearing on the doorsteps wasn't so pleasing to the ears".
