Iran: Mastermind behind Tehran attacks killed

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the suicide bombings and gun attacks on parliament and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, that killed 17 people on Wednesday.

In a condolence message ahead of a funeral for the victims, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the attack: "will not damage the Iranian nation's determination and the obvious result is nothing except an increase in hate for the governments of the United States and their stooges in the region like Saudi (Arabia)", state media reported.

Authorities said Saturday that they identified and arrested an IS-affiliated cell of some 60 members in the suburb of Tehran, Iran's IRNA news agency reported.

The six attackers were Iranians who had joined IS, the deputy secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Reza Seifollahi, said on state TV.

Iran's Police Chief, Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari, cited the "good cooperation" of the Iranian people with police and other security forces as having been conducive to the identification and arrest of the terrorists. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad-Zarif called it "repugnant" on Twitter and said the Iranian people "reject" the statement. "We underscore that states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote, he said".

The Sunni militants of IS consider Shiite Iranians to be apostates, and Tehran is deeply involved in fighting the group in both Syria and Iraq.

"We are focused on intelligence" gathering, he said.

The almost simultaneous attacks claimed 12 lives and injured 42 people when a combination of suicide bombers and gunmen stormed Iran's parliament and the shrine of the "father of the 1979 revolution", Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard indirectly blamed Saudi Arabia for the attacks.

The comments sparked anger from Iranians on social media, who recalled the vigils in Tehran that followed the September 11 attacks.

At a ceremony held in parliament, attended by newly re-elected moderate President Hassan Rouhani, speaker Ali Larijani also attacked the United States and Saudi Arabia. A statement issued Wednesday evening stopped short of alleging direct Saudi involvement.
