Jeff Sessions to Face Long-awaited Senate Grilling on Russia Ties, Comey Firing

His comments came as Christopher Ruddy, chief executive of Newsmax Media and a friend of Donald Trump visited the White House on Monday, said in a TV interview that the president may consider firing Mr Mueller.

Mr. Comey said that there were matters with respect to the recusal that were problematic, and he couldn't talk about them. "You don't walk into any hearing or committee meeting and reveal confidential communications with the President of the United States who is entitled to receive confidential communications and your best judgment about a host of issues, and - and to be accused of stonewalling for not answering them so I would push back on that".

Comey himself had a riveting appearance before the same Senate panel last week, with some key moments centered on Sessions.

"I'm not going to follow any orders unless I believe those are proper and appropriate orders", he said. But he said the fact that Comey and Trump were alone was "not problematic", by itself, Sessions said.

Sessions' testimony suggested that it would be on Comey to shut down inappropriate discussions with Trump. "What are these longstanding DOJ rules?"

The high-stakes testimony also takes place amid reported friction between Sessions and Trump, who criticized the attorney general's decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe.

"I do not" Sessions said when asked whether he knows whether the president records his conversations.

"The rules apply to the Department of Justice, so it's the duty of the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent to say, 'Mr". I am concerned that the president still does not recognize the severity of the threat.

A Justice Department spokesman confirmed to HuffPost this week that former Attorney General Eric Holder's 2009 memo on contacts between the White House and the Justice Department is still in effect.

The attorney general may also face questions on this.

Sessions refused to say whether he had ever discussed the Russian Federation investigation with Trump, arguing that he could not disclose private communications with the president.

Mr Sessions, who was appointed as Donald Trump's top justice official, said he did not recall meeting the Russian ambassador to the United States at an April event in the Mayflower Hotel in Washington attended by the USA president, contrary to recent media reports.

Wyden then asked about Sessions' interactions with James Comey, the ex-FBI director fired by President Trump.

Mr Trump has denied he tried to interfere with the probe.

"The suggestion that I participated with any collusion, that I was aware of any collusion with the Russian government to hurt this country, which I have served with honor for 35 years, or to undermine the integrity of our democratic process, is an appalling and detestable lie".

Comey, testifying before the same committee last week, defended his decision to announce the results on his own.
