John Major: Tory-DUP deal could jeopardise Northern Ireland peace

"And that worries me a great deal about the peace process".

Sir John said he wanted Theresa May to "succeed" and "stay" as Prime Minister, and that he understood and sympathised with her wanting to "shore up her parliamentary position" but said his "main concern" was the peace process.

Questioned on the DUP's stance on gay rights, he said he does "not subscribe" to the Northern Irish party's position.

She will nearly certainly ask for greater investment in Northern Ireland as part of the deal, as well as guarantees on support for pension plans and for winter fuel allowances for older people.

"They confirmed their joint commitment to restoring a Northern Ireland Executive as soon as possible and agreed that both countries would continue to engage closely to bring about political stability in Northern Ireland".

The talks with the DUP follow May's apology to Conservative rank-and-file lawmakers in a meeting Monday that signaled she would be more open to consultation, particularly with business leaders demanding answers about the details on Britain's departure from the European Union.

TALKS between Theresa May and the DUP over a deal that would prop up the Conservative government have been "constructive" and are "going well".

James Brokenshire said the current process, which involves the United Kingdom and Irish governments chairing elements of the negotiations and the head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service moderating other discussions, was the "right approach". The Prime Minister explained that she is working towards a confidence and supply deal with the DUP which would provide stability and certainty for the United Kingdom going forward.

And the pressure on Mrs May has increased even further after the Government admitted the Queen's Speech could be delayed. Devolved government at Stormont, site of the Northern Ireland assembly, broke down in January and has yet to restart.

Downing Street has warned that direct rule from London could be imposed if no solution is found before the June 29 deadline.

While the DUP backed Brexit, it has already stated that it opposes a hard border and wants to maintain the Common Travel Area which would allow the movement of goods and services to go unhindered.

Kenny said in a tweet on Sunday that he had talked to the British premier and warned him that the deal could imperil the Good Friday Agreement (GFA).

And he highlighted the danger of "hard men still there, lurking in the corners of communities deciding they wish to return to some sort of violence".

"We need to do everything we conceivably can to ensure that doesn't happen, and that does require an impartial British government", he said.
