Leahy angry Sessions canceled on appropriations hearing

"It did not violate my recusal", Sessions responded.

"At all times throughout the course of the campaign, the confirmation process, and since becoming Attorney General, I have dedicated myself to the highest standards", Sessions said, according to ABC News. "She was interrupted for asking tough questions", Harris' fellow committee member, Senator Ron Wyden tweeted. "Americans don't want to hear that answers to relevant questions are privileged".

"The policy is based on the principle -" Sessions replied.

Sessions repeatedly refused to discuss private conversations with Trump on a wide variety of topics.

Jeff Sessions raised more questions than he answered in front of the Intelligence Committee, which is why Senator Franken and his colleagues on the Judiciary Committee deserve the opportunity to question the man who lied to them. Sessions said Trump had not invoked executive privilege regarding the conversations.

It was way back on January 10, during then Senator Sessions confirmation hearing to become Attorney General, that Senator Franken asked a key question: What would Sessions do as a Attorney General if there was evidence that anyone with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russians?

The committee's Republican chairman, Richard Burr, asked Sessions to ask the White House if there were areas officials there would be comfortable with him answering and provide written answers if so.

Jeff Sessions has heatedly denied that he had any undisclosed meeting with the Russian ambassador or conversations with Russian officials about the U.S. elections.

"I don't like to be rushed this fast, it makes me nervous", Sessions said to Harris.

Testifying at a Senate hearing, Mr Sessions said it was a "detestable and appalling lie" to suggest that he participated in or was aware of any collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) whether Sessions "lingered" because he knew he wasn't supposed to leave Comey alone with Trump, Sessions ducked: "What I did recall is I did depart", Sessions said, "and Director Comey was sitting in front of the president's desk and they were talking". But under questioning, Sessions acknowledged that Trump's campaign foreign policy advisers "never functioned as a coherent team" and there were members of that group he never met.

At a separate hearing Tuesday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, overseeing that effort since Sessions stepped aside, said he's seen no basis for firing Mueller, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director he appointed as special counsel.

Comey testified last week that the president asked him to drop an investigation into his former national security advisor, Michael Flynn.

But his refusal to answer questions about his conversations with President Donald Trump, particularly whether they discussed the reasons for Comey's firing in an Oval Office meeting the day before the dismissal, was most disturbing.

He said "not one thing that was improper" occurred during two meetings he had with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, as he denied speaking with Mr Kislyak on a third occasion.

During the hearing, Sessions lent his support to the special counsel, Robert Mueller, who is now in charge of the Trump campaign-Russia investigation.

Sessions also denied the notion that concerns about Trump's behavior caused him to linger after a meeting when Trump asked for everyone but Comey to leave the room.
