United will reportedly pay around £30.75 million (€35m) for Sweden worldwide Lindelof, 22, and his former club Vasteras, who play in Sweden's third tier, could now receive a payment in the region of €5m after resolving a dispute with Benfica.

Jose Mourinho had identified Keane as a potential signing this summer but United announced an agreement with Benfica for Lindelof earlier this week.

It's tempting to think that in buying Lindelof to play with Bailly, Mourinho is attempting to create a new version of what was perhaps United's finest center back partnership of the modern era in Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Lindelof is a superb reader of the game, strong in the tackle and skilled in passing the ball when he wins possession.

Wilkins believes Lindelof has "done absolutely nothing" and says Keane would have been a better addition to United's back four than the 22-year-old Swede.

Lindelof has been with Benfica since 2012, and made 47 appearances for the Portuguese league and cup champions last season.

Reports in Portugal claim that United are favourites to sign the 23-year-old who enjoyed a successful season with the Ligue 1 outfit having helped Monaco to their first league title since the 1999/00 season.
