May to form new government after losing parliamentary majority

With 649 of 650 seats declared, the Conservatives had won 318 seats, short of the 326 needed for a parliamentary majority.

May had called Thursdays early election to strengthen her hand in Brexit talks but instead lost the Conservatives overall majority in Parliament.

Standing in front of 10 Downing Street, May said her Conservatives and the DUP will work together to “fulfil the promise of Brexit.”.

That the result of the British election has come as a shock to Theresa May is stating the obvious, but what perhaps may not be as obvious is the underlying message it has given to the Tories and its leadership.

If that threshold is not met, parties must form a coalition or risk losing the ability to govern effectively due to a hung Parliament. The gamble backfired. On Friday morning, it became clear the Tories lost seats in the south of the country while failing to break into Labour's heartlands further north.

With no clear victor emerging from Thursday's election, a wounded May signalled that she would fight on. Given that the elections led to a hung parliament, failing to form a majority government as the Conservatives secured 318 seats and the Labour Party secured 261, the United Kingdom is now left with the minority government option.

But in one of the most sensational nights in British electoral history, a resurgent Labour Party denied her an outright win, throwing the country into political turmoil as no clear victor emerged.

Jeremy Corbyn could have been Britain's next Prime Minister - if it wasn't for the performance of the Conservatives in Scotland.

The Conservatives have won 44 per cent of the vote, Labour 41 per cent, the Liberal Democrats 8 per cent, UKIP 2 per cent and the Greens 2 per cent.

The campaign had played out differently in Scotland, the main faultline being the SNP's drive for a second referendum on independence from Britain, having lost a plebiscite in 2014.

The European Union's budget commissioner Guenther Oettinger said Friday he was unsure if Britain's negotiations about leaving the EU - known as "Brexit" - could begin on time after the Thursday election failed to elect a clear victor, according to a report by Reuters. Now the European Union negotiators know she hasn't got the full backing of the British people.

"This will allow us to come together as a country and channel our energies towards a successful Brexit deal that works for everyone in this country - securing a new partnership with the European Union which guarantees our long-term prosperity".
