Firefighters battled a massive fire in a 27-floor high-rise apartment building in west London for several hours Wednesday.

Former chancellor and now editor of the Evening Standard George Osborne tweeted: "Just seen this very bad tower block fire near my home in W London". At least 30 people were taken to hospitals.

Witnesses could hear screaming from the upper floors as the flames rose and one desperate resident could be seen waving a white cloth.

Flames ravaged the tower, lighting up the pre-dawn west London skyline and sending up a thick plume of black smoke.

More than 200 firefighters and 40 engines have been dispatched to tackle a huge fire at Grenfell Tower in Latimer Road, near Notting Hill, in West London.

Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton called it an "unprecedented incident" unlike anything she had seen in her 29-year career as a firefighter.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear.

"Anyone who is concerned about loved ones in relation to the fire should contact Casualty Bureau which has been opened following the fire".

A number of people are feared dead.

London 's Metropolitan Police say at least six people have died in the fire and the death toll is expected to rise.

Eyewitness Jody Martin said: "I watched one person falling out, I watched another woman holding her baby out the window.hearing screams".

"It was like a split second before the whole building was on fire".

It is not yet known what caused the fire but reports suggest it could be an electrical fault and witnesses possibly an exploding fridge.

"Based on the level of resources that were needed at this fire we declared it a major incident in the early hours of this morning", Cotton said in a statement.

"Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this truly shocking fire at Grenfell Tower", Met Police Cmdr.

"Crews wearing breathing apparatus and extended duration breathing apparatus have been working in extremely challenging and very hard conditions to rescue people and bring this major fire under control".

London Ambulance Service medics, who are specially trained in life-saving medical care in hazardous environments, have also been sent to the scene.

Speaking on Wednesday morning, Khan said: "I want to thank our incredible firefighters and emergency services for their vast courage, dedication and professionalism".
