Murray ousts Del Potro

Andy Murray can start to look ahead at the French Open after defusing the power game of Juan Martin del Potro to reach the fourth round.

Following four-set victories over Andrey Kuznetsov and Martin Klizan, the Scot took down Juan Martin Del Potro 7-6 (8), 7-5, 6-0 during third-round action on Saturday afternoon.

It looked a nightmare draw against a player falsely low in the rankings as he continues to work his way back up after wrist problems that nearly ended his career.

Not on Saturday, as he reduced Juan Martin Del Potro to a picture of despair by stealing the first set with a fightback that was straight out of last season's playbook. But the Scot recaptured his very best form to surge into the second week at the Paris capital.

"I expected a very tough match, and the first set was very, very important for the rest of the match", said Murray.

"I'm happy with how the match was today".

"But mentally I feel pretty good just now". "I tried to find good words for that moment", said del Potro.

"That's been the case so far". When we got to the Davis Cup, I'd played the Olympics, gone to Cincinnati and then NY. I was not playing well. Under constant pressure from an aggressive foe, del Potro had some trouble from Murray's drop shots and wound up making far more unforced errors, 43-28. When he properly unloads, gasps from the crowd are sure to follow, and it put the Argentinian in control of the first set.

"He took the little chance to win both (of the first two) sets, Del Potro reflected". I knew that if I stayed behind the baseline, he can only do so much.

The rain delay suited Kei Nishikori as he recovered to beat Hyeon Chung 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 0-6, 6-4 when their third round match resumed at the French Open.

They each had a significant win previous year with Murray taking gold at the Rio Olympics final and Del Potro edging a five-set thriller when Argentina beat Britain in the Davis Cup semifinals.

The 21-year-old Russian beat John Isner in four sets to set up a fourth-round tie with the world No. 1 - a match he is keenly looking forward to. "He had some opportunities to close it out". "Whoever had won that first set had big momentum", Murray said.

Murray, who has never won the clay court Grand Slam, won an 84-minute opening set after clinching a tiebreak 10-8.

Del Potro also suffered an injury scare himself when he pulled up, holding his left groin in the second set.

"When I was young, like from 10 to 12, I was having chess classes", he said. I'm in the fourth round, and I will try to prepare and to do my best. Wozniacki also broke in half of Kuznetsova's 12 service games. He was a real number one. Sometimes the balls would then go crosscourt diagonally, and only a very, very few smart players can do that.

"But I'm not thinking about winning [the tournament] after each round. If I had been in slightly better condition and with a better backhand, it would have been more hard for him".
