New York Mets apologize after mascot Mr Met gives fans the finger

It wasn't clear what led to Wednesday's incident, although the man who posted the brief video on Twitter insisted that contrary to some reports he did nothing to provoke Mr. Met.

Mr. Met, the lovable mascot for New York's National League baseball team, wasn't showing the fans how many runs the Mets scored in their 7-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. Mr. Met is a NY icon, a mascot who's appeared on SportsCenter, Conan, 30 Rock and in a Daily Show segment that revealed his profane side when the team fired Willie Randolph.

Chase Anderson pitched seven shutout innings and the Brewers benefited - temporarily, anyway - when a bat boy wearing a Milwaukee jersey bumped into Mets infielder Wilmer Flores on a foul popup Thursday in a 2-1 victory over NY.

The New York Mets have apologised for the "inappropriate" action of the employee, saying they were dealing with the matter "internally".

This is just the latest incident in what's been a tough season all around for the Mets organization. In a rather ironic line, the team's description of Mr. Met says "he may be quiet now, but can gesture in 12 different languages".

New York Mets manager Terry Collins was ejected Thursday after arguing over a weird play involving a bat boy at Citi Field.

Expected to contend for a playoff spot, the Mets are 23-28, hurt by injuries to ace starter Noah Syndergaard, closer Jeurys Familia and slugger Yoenis Cespedes.

Mr. Met has been around for more than five decades, long popular with NY fans for his oversized baseball head.

In the fall of 2010, Rufus the Bobcat, the mascot of Ohio University, launched a premeditated attack on Ohio State's Brutus Buckeye in front of 105,075 fans packed inside the Horseshoe. There is also the question of how exactly Mr. Met could raise a middle finger when the mascot's costume only has three fingers and a thumb, but the Mets are probably not particularly concerned about that.

DON'T DO ANYTHING DUMB: As a mascot, you're representing an institution or a team that wants you to create warm and fuzzy feelings, not shame.

Mets pitchers walked eight for the second straight night.

So much has gone right for Eric Sogard and the Milwaukee Brewers this season, they naturally thought they'd caught yet another break on a weird play.

Mr. Met has been the official mascot of the Mets for 55 years and, according to the BBC, more than one person dons the Mr. Met costume per season.

It's unclear what prompted the reaction from Mr. Met, who is known for his baseball-shaped head. The Mets finally got on the scoreboard the first pitch after Anderson departed, when Flores greeted righty reliever Jacob Barnes with a solo homer.

The club then issued a statement of apology. He was named America's Favorite Mascot in 2012 and joined Twitter in 2014.
