No longer NBA champions, Cavaliers are now chasing Warriors

The party began as soon as Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry and the Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 129-120 at Oracle Arena to clinch their second championship in three years.

Durant capped his spectacular first season with the Warriors by bringing home that coveted National Basketball Association championship he joined Golden State last July so determined to get, scoring 39 points in a fast-and-furious, Finals-clinching 129-120 victory over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5 on Monday night.

Two-time league MVP Steph Curry drained 34 points to go along with 10 assists, while 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala saved his best for last, coming off the bench to score 20 points on nine-of-14 shooting. The Warriors completed a 16-1 playoff run, the best post-season win percentage in National Basketball Association history.

LeBron James fell two assists shy of his second consecutive triple-double, contributing team highs of 41 points and 13 boards for the Cavaliers.

The first player Durant embraced following the victory was James, who gave a valiant effort himself and was matched up with the Warriors forward for most of the series.

An eight-times NBA All-Star, Durant has appeared in five Western Conference finals and two NBA Finals, the first in 2012 where his former Oklahoma City team lost in five games to the Miami Heat. I'm just so happy Kevin has broken through. Cleveland needs an infusion of young blood to fix a second unit that struggled from the opener. "This is a team sport and I just try and do my best with the team". And the Cavaliers' defense stumbled, leaving the Warriors with several painfully easy shots. Pretty much all their big-name guys are in their 20s, and they don't show any signs of slowing down. "I can't wait to celebrate with my teammates".

LeBron James is still the best basketball player on the planet, and he proved it in The Finals.

An unfounded rumor swirled Tuesday morning that the Warriors, who won Monday night's championship game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, had "unanimously" made a decision to boycott the White House invitation to meet President Trump. Durant's 11 points and Golden State's attacking defensive work powered the surge. He's the one who persuaded Irving to sign a long-term deal with Cleveland before it was known that James was coming back and Griffin pulled off the trade for Kevin Love. West, Thompson and J.R. Smith received techs after a replay review.
