No plan to sack Russian Federation probe head Mueller: US justice official

Trump also had other issues on his mind on Tuesday as reflected in his tweets, the Russian Federation probe among them, as he sought to deflect attention towards Hillary Clinton and the investigation into her use of a private email server that came up during fired FBI director James Comey's testimony last week. Such a move would create a firestorm coming weeks after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence committee says Congress would not sit still if President Donald Trump chose to fire the special counsel leading the investigation into Russian interference in the US election and possible collusion with Trump's campaign.

Trump's allies have begun raising questions about special counsel Robert Mueller's impartiality - he's a former FBI director who has worked with fired FBI Director James Comey - and floating the idea that Trump might replace him.

PBS' Judy Woodruff reported Monday that Trump friend Chris Ruddy told her after visiting the White House that Trump is "considering perhaps terminating" Mueller - a decision that would set off a massive political backlash.

Sessions is testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday afternoon.

Ruddy was interviewed after visiting the White House - but not the president - earlier in the day.

Sessions said he recused himself from the Justice Department's Russian Federation investigation only because of a regulation to require the step because of his involvement in the Trump campaign.

Ruddy issued a terse response directed at Spicer, but also admitted he didn't speak to Trump personally about this.

"I can't imagine that that issue is going to arise", he added.

Congress' decision not to renew the law followed the independent counsel investigations of then-President Bill Clinton's conduct by the widely-criticized former Solicitor General Kenneth Starr and several other special prosecutors, which collectively cost almost $80 million.

Gingrich said on Twitter that 'Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair.

Rosenstein said he would agree to dismiss Mueller only if there were a legitimate basis to do so, and an order from the president would not necessarily qualify.

At the time, Sessions said he was recusing himself only because he was involved in the 2016 campaign as an adviser to the Trump campaign. "And I'm not going to speculate on what he will or will not do", Mr Sekulow said.

Asked in a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing if there was any cause to fire Mueller, Rosenstein flatly replied: "No".

Current law - namely, Title 28, Chapter 6, Part 600, Section 7 of the Code of Federal Regulations - states that the attorney general reserves the right to remove or discipline a special counsel "for misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity, conflict of interest or for other good cause, including violation of Departmental policies". "I don't know, Sen". Richardson refused and resigned, as did Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus.

Rosenstein said "no, I have not", when asked by Sen.

Leahy told Rosenstein "you are not the witness who should be behind this table".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions heatedly denied on Tuesday that he had any undisclosed meeting with the Russian ambassador or conversations with Russian officials about the USA elections. "If there were not good cause, it would not matter to me what anybody said", he said.

"Recommending Director Comey's firing would seem to be a violation of his recusal, and Attorney General Sessions needs to answer for that", Senate Minority Leader Charles SchumerCharles SchumerDem senators seize on Senate press crackdown It's the oil, stupid: Why Democrats must block Trump on infrastructure Senate reaches deal on Russian Federation sanctions MORE (D-N.Y.) said in a statement Monday.
