North Korea releases jailed American student

Tillerson said the State Department had secured Warmbier's release per a decision from President Trump, and that the student was on his way home via a US military base in Sapporo, Japan, to be reunited with his family in Cincinnati.

"Otto has left North Korea".

The 56-year-old NBA Hall of Famer, who was heavily criticized for failing to raise the plight of a jailed U.S. missionary on a previous trip, said discussing detained United States citizens was "not my goal right now". The article noted there was no way of knowing yet whether the North Korean version of events was accurate.

"We learned of (his coma) only one week ago", the family's statement said. "We get to see our son Otto tonight", he said. We wish him well.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the State Department had secured Warmbier's release at the direction of the president.

Warmbier was detained in January 2016 at the airport in Pyongyang while on his way home. Warmbier is in a coma, his father tells NPR.

A North Korean foreign ministry official said Rodman would stay until Saturday.

According to CNN, Warmbier's release leaves three United States citizens now known to be held in North Korea: accounting professor Kim Sang Duk, businessman Kim Dong Chul and Pyongyang University worker Kim Hak-Song. The man who once played alongside Michael Jordan while making public appearances in a wedding dress would eventually go on to star in bad movies alongside Jean Claude Van Dam, before ultimately grasping for the last bit of headline-worthy stardom he could reach, and serving alongside a dictator as the tallest cog in the North Korean propaganda machine.

Republican Senator Rob Portman says North Korea should be "universally condemned for its abhorrent behaviour".

The president of the University of Virginia said the school is "deeply concerned and saddened" to learn that their student is in a coma. He said that over the past 18 months, Warmbier's family has "had to endure more than any family should have to bear". While a video, uploaded on YouTube and shared on Twitter, addresses Rodman's "unique relationship" with both Jong-Un and President Donald Trump (Rodman appeared on The Celebrity Apprentice), NPR reports that it's unlikely that the former Chicago Bulls player will be serving as a liaison of any official capacity.

"Our son is coming home", Fred Warmbier told The Washington Post Tuesday morning, after his son had been evacuated from North Korea.

"My objective is to go over there and try to see if I can keep bringing sports to North Korea", the athlete told reporters at the airport. "This is him freelancing", the official told Reuters.

Rodman later apologized for the comments he made on Bae, who was released in November that year.

This is not the first time for Rodman to visit North Korea; he purportedly visited North Korea at least four times.

Two of them, Kim Sang Duk and Kim Hak-song, are academics who worked at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology.

After the game, the VICE crew and the players were rushed across Pyongyang unexpectedly for a dinner with Kim and other members of North Korea's government.

Tillerson said the United States is discussing their respective cases with the North Korean regime.

He probably hopes things will go more smoothly on his latest visit to North Korea, which started Tuesday. It has been widely reported that Rodman and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un are good friends.

"We also call on North Korea to immediately release Kim Dong Chul, a Korean-American who was arrested in April 2016; Tony Kim, a Korean-American who was arrested in April 2017; Kim Hak-Song, a Korean-American who was arrested in May 2017; and Hyeon Soo Lim, a Korean-Canadian who was arrested in February 2015".

He tearfully confessed to being "lured by the United States administration to commit a crime in this country". State news media said Warmbier visited North Korea with the intention of "bringing down the foundation of its single-minded unity".
