North Korean prisoner Otto Warmbier returns to the USA

A plane carrying Warmbier arrived at a Cincinnati airport around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday.

A former University of Virginia student was medically evacuated Tuesday from North Korea, where he had been detained 17 months accused of crimes against the secretive, totalitarian regime.

They added they were grateful their son "will finally be with people who love him".

But amid the relief, there are also new questions about what happened to him: how did a healthy 22-year-old man fall into such a deep coma? That would be grounds in North Korea for a subversion charge. Trump 2016." Trump responded: "Thank you DennisRodman.

Tillerson said the State Department is still working to secure the release of three other US citizens detained in North Korea.

Rodman, who was once a contestant on President Donald Trump's reality show, "Celebrity Apprentice", declined to say whether he had spoken with Trump when CNN caught him at the airport in China on his way to North Korea.

News of Warmbier's release emerged around the time that former basketball star Dennis Rodman returned to North Korea for a second visit.

The State Department denied any connection between Warmbier's release and Rodman's visit, which the Trump administration said it did not authorize.

Warmbier's parents did not attend the graduation ceremony in May, but they shared the news of Otto's release with the student body via an email from University President Teresa Sullivan on Tuesday.

Warmbier, 22, of OH, was charged with "hostile acts against the state" after attempting to steal a propaganda poster while on a trip to the country from China.

He was charged with "hostile acts against the state". But with the USA leading a growing global coalition determined to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile testing as well as threats against neightbors and Western countries, the Americans could be bargaining chips at best and human shields at worst, according to experts. He told reporters there that he does not intend to bring up the three USA citizens still detained in the country, according to the AP.

He was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor after a tearful one-hour trial.

James Leigh, a Canadian visitor to North Korea, told Radio Free Asia he was in the same detention room as Tony Kim, aka Kim Sang Duk, who was detained April 22. The Warmbiers said they were told their son has remained in a coma since then.

The United States has no formal diplomatic relations with North Korea.

"It wasn't a situation where they asked", the official said of the American representatives.

In November 2014, USA spy chief James Clapper went to Pyongyang to bring home Matthew Miller, who had ripped up his visa when entering the country and was serving a six-year sentence on an espionage charge, and Korean-American missionary Kenneth Bae, who had been sentenced to 15 years for alleged anti-government activities. And Yun was dispatched to North Korea and visited Warmbier with two doctors on Monday, and demanded his release. They have taken steps, visible steps that we can confirm. The North Koreans agreed and he was flown out on Tuesday.

But State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the visit "had nothing to do with the release".

The official, who was not authorized to speak on the record about the sequence of events and requested anonymity, said that after Tillerson consulted with Trump, Yun was dispatched to North Korea.

On Tuesday, Warmbier was reportedly released from North Korea and evacuated to the US, bringing his 15-year prison sentence to an early end.

The Warmbiers were told that he had come down with a case of botulism soon after his trial and had been given a sleeping pill, from which he never woke up.
