Oddball musical Dear Evan Hansen wins six Tony awards

While the musical performances and the inspiring acceptance speeches were the stars of the evening, some of the political moments at the Tonys stole the spotlight.

"Hello, Dolly!" took home the award.

The surprise hit musical won a total of six Tonys, including best musical actor for 23-year-old newcomer Ben Platt in the title role, featured actress Rachel Bay Jones, as well as best book, score and orchestrations. This year the Tony voters spread the wealth around, calling "Hello Dolly" the best musical revival, and honoring its star Bette Midler.

Including the chutzpah to tell the Tony producers to "shut that crap off" when they tried to play her off stage with music. Some non-white nominees, like set designer Mimi Lien and orchestrator Alex Lacamoire, won trophies, and the cast of "Jitney" - mostly African-American - helped it win the revival Tony.

The singer, who shimmered in a silver sequined gown, called the show "one of the greatest professional experiences of my entire life" and gave thanks to make-up artist for making her "look 30 years younger".

This play has the ability to lift your spirits in these bad, awful times.

Kevin Kline won his third Tony Award playing an egomaniacal matinee idol in the midst of personal turmoil in the play Present Laughter. Spacey said that he "just wanted to do a joke nobody would ever think I'd do".

Best actor victor Kevin Kline summed up the mood by saluting the NEA (National Endowment for the Arts), which faces funding cuts under the Trump regime.

Nixon's speech, in which she quoted directly from The Little Foxes playwright Lillian Hellman, was a case in point. That helped Jones pay for her move to NY to follow her dream of becoming an actress.

Noting one of its lines about people who "eat the Earth" and others who "watch them do it", Nixon praised "the people who in 2017 are refusing to just stand around and watch them do it".

"Oslo", a J.T. Rogers play in which Israeli and Palestinian negotiators struggle to hammer out a peace deal, received rave reviews for turning a complicated history into an entertaining three hours. "Thank you, Broadway community". "I still have you on there", Biden said, and quipped, "I probably ruined your reputation".

Two graduates of the Miami arts high school that the Florida Legislature threatened to defund this spring won Tony Awards Sunday night at Radio City Musical Hall for their work on Broadway.

Bette Midler was determined to get every last "thank you" in at the 2017 Tony Awards on Sunday night, play-off music be damned.

Christopher Ashley won Best Direction of a Musical for Come From Away.
