Ramsey County District Judge William H. Leary III presides over the trial of Jeronimo Yanez in St. Paul Monday

Officer Jeronimo Yanez fatally shot Philando Castile, a 32-year-old cafeteria worker during a traffic stop on July 6, 2016.

St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez, 29, has been charged with one count of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of risky discharge of a firearm.

Yanez, who pleaded not guilty, testified on Friday in Ramsey County District Court in St. Paul that Castile disregarded the officer's commands and began reaching for a firearm he had disclosed he had in his possession.

Prosecutors have run with the theory that Yanez's failure to use the word "gun" to alert responding officers at the scene and his language with investigators indicate that he never saw Castile's gun, which was later recovered from his right front shorts pocket, per Star Tribune.

The police video of the traffic stop and Reynolds' Facebook Live post were played in the courtroom last week.

According to reports, jurors heard testimony from several witnesses and are expected to begin deliberations Monday after final arguments.

They must unanimously agree about whether Yanez was guilty or not guilty on each of the three charges Yanez faces: second-degree manslaughter and two counts of felony risky discharge of a firearm.

After three white alternates were dismissed after closing arguments, the 12-member jury included two black and ten white people.

Defense attorneys have argued that Yanez's actions were reasonable. Jurors are set to return to the Ramsey County Courthouse Tuesday morning to continue their work.

"He did what he was supposed to do", the prosecutor said. He said Castile was high on marijuana and didn't follow Yanez's orders.

And the definition of "culpable negligence" is "intentional conduct that (Yanez) may not have meant to be harmful, but that an ordinary and reasonably prudent person would recognize as involving a strong possibility of injury to others".

He says Yanez legitimately thought Castile was a robbery suspect.

"He had no reason to pull a gun", the prosecutor said.

In his statement to the BCA about what he saw in Castile's hand, Paulsen claimed Yanez said, "I know he had an object and it was dark".

The jury also made a request to view the transcript of the BCA interview conducted with Yanez, however, the judge denied that request because it was never submitted as evidence.

Paulsen reminded the jury of a bullet wound to what would have been Castile's trigger finger - and that there was no corresponding bullet damage nor wounds in the area of Castile's right shorts pocket, where he carried his gun.

"Yanez did not wait until he was sure....he got nervous and put his safety above everyone else", Paulsen said.

Gray asked the jury to give more weight to their use-of-force experts than the prosecution's.

"The victim in this case was a good man too", Paulsen said, and referred to Castile's job at an elementary school.

Gray went on to say that Yanez was traumatized and that "he saw the gun".

Toward the conclusion of his closing argument, Gray told jurors that if they take in all the facts of the case they'll see that the state "failed miserably".

Castile had THC, a component of marijuana, in his blood when he died.

"The determination of reasonableness must embody allowance for the fact that police officers are often forced to make split-second judgments about the force that is necessary in a particular situation under circumstances that are tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving", the instructions state.
