Otto Warmbier released from North Korea in a coma

North Korea has freed an imprisoned USA citizen from its custody, Turkey's Anadolu Agency (AA) reported Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as saying on Tuesday.

CNN reported that Warmbier was headed for the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he would arrive late Tuesday. North Korea accuses Washington and South Korea of sending spies to overthrow its government.

An airplane carrying Otto Warmbier, who is from OH, landed in Cincinnati late Tuesday night.

Department of State spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters Rodman had nothing to do with Warmbier's release. A person who answered the phone at Warmbier's family's OH residence said: "No comment, thank you" and hung up.

But amid the relief, there were also new questions about what happened to him: How did a healthy young man fall into such a deep coma? Fowle left a Bible in a local club hoping a North Korean would find it, which is considered a criminal offence in North Korea. And how does the Trump administration respond?

He said the United States continues to have talks with Pyongyang about three other American citizens who are reportedly detained in the North.

Rodman said the issue of several Americans detained by North Korea is "not my objective right now", in remarks made in Beijing before the release of Warmbier was publicly disclosed. "My goal is to go over there and try to see if I can keep bringing sports to North Korea".

That was used as evidence in his hour-long trial, during which North Korea accused him of committing "hostile acts" against the regime at the urging of a purported member of a church in his home state of OH, a secretive university organization and the Central Intelligence Agency. They said he tried to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel while visiting the country. He was charged with "hostile acts against the state".

He had not been seen in public since, and Swedish diplomats, representing US interests, had been denied consular access to him.

The White House says a US envoy met with North Korean foreign ministry representatives in Norway last month as part of efforts to win freedom for Americans held by Pyongyang.

But in Pyongyang, the Swedes were allowed to see only one detainee, and it wasn't Warmbier.

Mr. Rodman is a Hall of Fame professional basketball player who formed a personal relationship with the diminutive North Korean dictator Kim several years ago, traveling to North Korea to give basketball demonstrations.

On April 22, 2016 Sugarman met with the North Korean Ambassador in NY.

He informed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who consulted with the president, the officials said.

The North Korean court held that Warmbier had committed a crime "pursuant to the USA government's hostile policy toward (the North), in a bid to impair the unity of its people after entering it as a tourist". North Korea is expecting another vi.

"It wasn't a situation where they asked", one official said of the US representatives. "This is the North Korean version of events. They should be released immediately." .

They say that Otto Warmbier is on a Medivac flight on his way home.

Yun arrived on Monday, visited Warmbier with two doctors and demanded his release, the official said. Warmbier's family said in a statement that he is in a coma and on his way home. Warmbier's parents said in a statement Tuesday that he had been freed by the Communist state but had to be medically evacuated because he was in a coma.

North Korean representatives at the United Nations did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Warmbier had been serving a 15-year prison term.

Warmbier was to have graduated last month had he not been detained.

University President Teresa Sullivan said in a statement that the school is relieved to hear Warmbier was released, but is concerned about his condition.

"We are so incredibly joyful that he is finally coming home". Sadly, he is in a coma and we have been told he has been in that condition since March of 2016. We're hopeful that with the excellent medical care that he'll receive that we'll receive some good news once they examine him.

U.S. Senator Rob Portman of OH said: "Otto's detainment and sentence was unnecessary and appalling, and North Korea should be universally condemned for its abhorrent behavior". At the meeting, North Korea agreed that Swedish diplomats could visit all four American detainees.

- South Korean-born USA citizen Kim Dong Chul, who was sentenced in April 2016 to 10 years in prison with hard labor after being convicted of espionage.

In April and May, North Korea detained two other Korean Americans, both of them affiliated with the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, a private institution run by Korean American Christians. A 2009 visit by former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, secured the freedom of American journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling. But efforts to persuade North Korea to release the men now held had not been successful until Warmbier's release Tuesday.
