POLLAK: James Comey's Admission Means Special Counsel Must Be Dropped

In calling Comey's leak "cowardly", the president appears to be echoing Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz, who said the same on Fox News Friday.

President Trump's picking and choosing which parts of James Comey's testimony he says are true, and which are false.

"Lordy, I hope there are tapes", James Comey said when asked if the president suggested he may have recorded their phone conversations. "Yes, I was on Judiciary Cmte that impeached Clinton/sent him for trial in the Senate for matters less serious than the ones before us now", Inglis tweeted Friday. "No collusion, no obstruction, he's a leaker", said President Trump. "Totally illegal?" he asked in a tweet.

Trump has been coy about whether any recordings exist of his private conversations with Comey, who was sacked by the president in May.

U.S. correspondent Richard Arnold told Mike Hosking Trump rejects those allegations.

Comey asks for a one-on-one with the president during the first meeting and then characterizes his next one-on-one as somewhat being cornered and that he was in shock after President Donald Trump said that he "hoped" the Michael Flynn matter could go away.

Mueller is investigating whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election and whether members of the Trump campaign team co-ordinated efforts with officials from Moscow.

But the case for obstruction of justice based on Comey's testimony is far from ironclad, legal scholars say.

In one of those exchanges, the president said he "hoped" Mr Comey could "find his way" to dropping an investigation into then-national security adviser, Michael Flynn, a Trump ally who was under scrutiny over his ties to Russian Federation.

Trump Jr. specifically said on the air, "When he tells you to do something, guess what?"

But Donald Trump refused to say whether his private conversations with the fired FBI Director were taped - an issue at the centre of conflicting accounts of what passed between them. He said he does not know, however, whether special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating Trump now - and left little doubt that he hopes Mueller is doing just that.

In his testimony, Comey also said Trump asked him in January to pledge loyalty to the president, an unusual request that would put in doubt the independence of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On Twitter, Trump went so far as to declare "total and complete vindication" even though Comey explicitly stated the president leaned on him to end the investigation into his pal Michael Flynn.

But at Friday's news conference, Trump told reporters that "100 per cent" he would testify under oath to give his version of conversations he had with Comey. Director Coates said the same thing. The committee also sent a letter to Comey asking for any notes or memos in his possession about the discussions he had with Trump before being abruptly fired last month.

Mr Trump's private attorney, Marc Kasowitz, seized on Mr Comey's admission that he had orchestrated the public release of the information. He also said he took Trump's comments about the Flynn probe "as a direction". House Speaker Paul Ryan has come to Trump's defense.
