Polls open in Virginia's primary election

Virginia's gubernatorial contest has received widespread national attention as the swing state is one of only two states electing new governors this year.

Virginia voters headed to the polls to today to make their pick for those vying for the bi-partisan slots in the June 13th Gubernatorial Primary.

"We've been able to get people excited who aren't normally into state elections: young voters, voters of color, rural voters who haven't been with the democratic party", said Perriello.

President Donald Trump also has not endorsed a Republican candidate, even though his former Virginia state co-chairman, Corey Stewart, is attempting to capitalize on similarities between him and the president as a way to win the open seat.

The victor of Tuesday's primary is likely to challenge Republican Ed Gillespie in November.

While Perriello may have embraced the party's progressive, populist mantle more than Northam, there are few gaps between the two when it comes to policy.

GONYEA: Meanwhile, back at the Northam event in Arlington, one of his supporters was there wearing a Bernie Sanders for president T-shirt. In both contests, support for public education and taxes have emerged as the leading issues: Hostutler's challenge of Sharp has turned into a referendum on the incumbent's degree of support for public schools, while Wilkerson's vote in April 2014 to increase the county's 50-cent real estate tax rate by two pennies has earned him the wrath of some in the local GOP.

RICHMOND, Va. - After a surprisingly close race, Ed Gillespie clinched the Republican nomination for governor, reports the Associated Press. Northam had always been considered the Democrats' successor to Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who's prohibited by law from running for a second term. Perriello sought to overcome this advantage by barnstorming Virginia over the weekend, beginning with a blitz of 24 hours of campaigning that started 7 a.m. Friday.

Perriello is touting his progressive credentials and has the support of the Vermont senator as well as Massachusetts Sen.

Entering primary election day, Gillespie was heavily favored to win the GOP nomination, as he lead in every major poll of the contest this year. At this town hall, Perriello lauded the big protests against the president's policies that have happened in Washington and around the country. Frank Wagner was at 14 percent.

Corey Stewart, a Minnesota-born lawyer with a soft spot for the Confederacy, almost pulled off a stunning upset in Tuesday's Republican primary for governor of Virginia. His pitch to voters is emotional, saying Trump's victory signaled a new moment in American politics and a more progressive pushback is needed.

Perriello is challenging the state's lieutenant-governor, Ralph Northam, in the primary. Stewart, the head of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, was a former Virginia co-chair for Trump. For lieutenant governor, Republican candidates are Glenn Davis, Bryce Reeves and Jill Vogel; Democratic candidates are Justin Fairfax, Susan Platt and Gene Rossi.
