President Trump calls James Comey 'very cowardly'

US President Donald Trump has claimed "total and complete vindication" in former FBI director James Comey's testimony, but his detractors insisted the deposition showed he tried to "improperly" stop and "potentially obstruct" the investigation into his then national security adviser Michael Flynn's Russian Federation dealings. It was the first public appearance of Comey since his firing in May.

Kasowitz accused Comey of misleading senators about the timing of his leak - Comey said he did it only after being alarmed by a tweet in which the president said the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation boss "better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

Mr Comey, who was sacked by Mr Trump in May, delivered a scathing indictment of the president on Thursday at a congressional hearing. Comey said he asked him to share his memo with a reporter. "Yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction", he said.

Later that day, Trump doubled down on his accusation during a press conference from the White House Rose Garden, The Hill reports.

Trump said Friday that he never told Comey that he hoped Comey could let his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, off the hook in some way.

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication...and WOW, Comey is a leaker!"

He said that he'd carefully documented his interactions with Trump because he anxious Trump would misrepresent them, and accused the administration of spreading "lies, plain and simple" about the reasons for his firing.

"Well, I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future", Trump said, according to the AP.

It remains unclear whether Comey did anything wrong with the memos since the leak occurred after he was sacked and the information in question was unclassified.

Trump's private lawyer to file leak complaint against Comey with DOJ's Inspector General & Senate Judiciary Cmte.

She added: "The president's fitness for office is something that has been called into question".

"In my view, this testimony constitutes evidence of an intention to interfere or potentially obstruct at least a portion of the Russian Federation investigation, if not more", Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the house intelligence committee - which is conducting a parallel Russian Federation probe - wrote in a statement.
