Prison guards killed by inmates during transport in Georgia

That police activity was related to the search for Donnie Russell Rowe, 43, and Ricky Dubose, 24.

One of the inmates shot and killed both officers, police said. Billue was 58 and is survived by his father, five sisters, two brothers and two sons, said Jim Green, an attorney speaking for the Billue family.

According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, Rowe was assigned to the Valdosta State Prison.

The corrections department said 33 inmates were on the bus when the pair escaped. They are armed with the officers' weapons and are considered extremely unsafe.

Authorities may have no shortage of witnesses to the killing of two guards on a prison bus in Georgia.

After Georgia Department of Corrections officers Christopher Monica and Curtis Billue were murdered Tuesday morning, Gov. Nathan Deal vowed state resources to track down the two inmates on the run and suspected of the crime.

Christopher Bish confirmed the inmates broke into a home in Madison and stole clothes and food, left their prison whites and made their escape. Authorities say it happened around 5:45 Tuesday morning on Georgia Highway 16 in Putnam County, which is about 75 miles east of Atlanta.

The corrections officers were killed while transporting prisoners during a work detail, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told CNN affiliate WSB.

Also on Monday, a decorated, 15-year veteran Arkansas police officer was shot during a traffic stop in a town about 90 miles (140 km) northeast of Little Rock. They reportedly escaped in a Honda Civic.

They are believed to be traveling in a 2004 Honda Civic 4 door with GA license plate RBJ660 and grass green in color.

Georgia Corrections urges anyone who sees the inmates to not approach them and to call 911.
