Hundreds of protesters across the USA participated in "Marches against Shariah" on Saturday to express their concerns about the perceived threat of radical Islam in America.

Demonstrators around the country rallied to protest Islamic law, saying it is incompatible with Western democracy.

The Republican based a large part of his campaign on anti-Islamic and anti-immigrant rhetoric, which saw him draw large crowds and votes across the nation.

Authorities have made several arrests after fights broke out during an anti-Shariah rally and counter-protest at the Minnesota State Capitol. Police used tear gas to disperse rowdy demonstrators and arrested three people.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has updates on a number of the ACT protests here.

Obviously, The Times' interpretation of something "taking root" is different than mine, and I imagine many other Americans agree with me.

ACT for America is the largest anti-Islam group in the United States and the drowning out of its narrative in such a fashion suggests that support for tolerance exceeds hate and bigotry - a fact that runs counter to the recent election of Donald Trump as president. "The more racists get a platform, the more people get attacked". Local activists set up an "Ask an American Muslim" booth where attendees could meet and learn about their Muslim neighbors.

The marches come amid a rise in reports of anti-Muslim incidents in the US, including arson attacks and vandalism at mosques, harassment of women wearing Muslim head coverings and bullying of Muslim schoolchildren.

Clusters of protesters and counter-protesters gathered on four corners of an intersection at a memorial to the slain, yelling and waving American flags and posters proclaiming various causes.

The organizer of the Seattle rally, Anthony Parish of Kent, clarified that what they held wasn't an anti-Muslim activity, but rather a march against practices like the mutilation of young girls and honor killing which the group attributed to Sharia law.

"We're anti-Shariah. We're anti-radicals", the Upland woman said.

There also was a report of one vehicle vandalized with broken windows.
