Protesters send message to Govt and U.S. on Paris Climate Agreement

The US's withdrawal from a leadership role in the Paris Agreement may see a shift of clean economic activity and innovation to Asia. The business leaders and officials described Trump's move as "out of step with what is happening in the United States".

Michael Bloomberg is pledging to fill a funding gap created by President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, offering up to $15 million to support the United Nations agency that helps countries implement the agreement.

· Trump doesn't speak for the whole of the US - States, municipalities, and businesses large and small in the US have stated that they will continue to invest in low-carbon technologies irrespective of whether the US is formally part of the Paris Agreement.

Lou Leonard, World Wildlife Fund's Senior Vice President of Climate Change and Energy told The Independent that the "We Are Still In" initiative represents $6.2 trillion of the USA economy.

Swaraj added: "Anyone who says we have signed Paris because of the lure of money, I reject that as baseless". At Paris, the USA set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to between 26 percent and 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025, and also outlined "mid-century" goals to get to zero emissions.

"Mayors, governors, and business leaders from both political parties are signing [on to] a statement of support that we will submit to the U.N.", Bloomberg said, "and together, we will reach the emission reduction goals the USA made in Paris in 2015".

The Paris agreement, which consists of individual greenhouse gas limits from almost 200 nations, is not designed for participation from parties other than national governments.

Pittsburgh is standing by Paris - and so are 200-plus other US cities. - despite President Donald Trump's announcement last week that he will withdraw the USA from the landmark Paris Agreement on climate change. Formed by New York, Washington, and California, the alliance is a coalition of states that have pledged to uphold the Paris climate agreement and take aggressive action on climate change.

"President Trump is trying to kick America to the sidelines in the race to protect our health and the planet", Garrett Garner-Wells, director of Environment Colorado, said in a news release. For many of them, it makes plenty of business sense: Certainty over what kind of environmental targets will prevail in years to come always trumps uncertainty. On Thursday, Mayor John A. McNally said: "Nothing about the USA withdrawal would seem to indicate any form of job creation for the city of Youngstown".

The Paris Agreement, which will be fully operational by 2020, is premised on contributions determined by countries themselves, towards collectively agreed global goals. A future president could have us back in the agreement in as little as 30 days, legal experts say. Since the president's announcement, ten governors and 212 mayors have committed to adopting the goals of the Paris accord-including the mayor of Pittsburgh, a former steel town which Mr Trump specifically invoked when explaining his withdrawal. IL has not joined the coalition, which includes California, New York, Washington, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Oregon, Hawaii and Virginia.
