Republicans Seek to Clear Air on Whether Trump Has Comey Tapes

US President Donald Trump has pushed back against Mr James Comey, accusing the ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation director of lying about their private conversations - and saying he is "100 per cent" willing to testify under oath.

"Just listen to the incredible reason Comey gave for taking detailed notes on his meetings with Trump", Oliver said before tossing to a Comey clip. Comey also said that he considered the comment to be a directive.

"Well, I didn't say that".

I believe that Comey, a seasoned prosecutor, was not almost as flustered by his meetings with Trump as he claims. "Totally illegal? Very 'cowardly!'" he wrote.

And we can surmise that such an order from the attorney general - a friend and political appointee of President Obama - is more damning than anything we know for certain about Trump and the Russians. And legal experts have questioned whether Comey's leak broke any law.

The White House also highlighted the fact Mr Comey stopped short of accusing Mr Trump of obstructing justice - a potentially impeachable offence.

The President's son said the family was "vindicated" after the Comey testimony as what he said was "basically ridiculous" and that Mr Comey had never been asked to drop the Russian Federation investigation.

Now that Comey has admitted that he wanted the notes out in public, some Republicans have increased their ire on him, and Corey Lewandowski, Trump's former campaign manager, called Comey part of the "deep state" and said he should be prosecuted if he leaked other material.

Senators have expressed hope that Mr Sessions' testimony on Tuesday will help flesh out the truth of Mr Comey's allegations, including Mr Sessions' presence at the White House in February when Mr Trump asked to speak to Mr Comey alone.

While there was speculation Trump might live-tweet Comey's appearance, the president waited until the day after to post his thoughts on social media. She could watch Trump for a decade and eventually conclude, 'I don't know, I think it's a cocktail of insecurity, horniness, and malice.

But Trump's denunciations of Comey have only fueled demands that the president - who has denied asking for loyalty or urging that the investigation be shelved - give his account under oath.

"I would be fine with issuing a subpoena, but that most likely would come from the special counsel's office", Collins told CNN. If your defense is that Comey is a liar, you can't cherry-pick the helpful bits and shout, "Vindication!" "Stop talking. You're heading into a giant perjury trap".
