Rod Rosenstein would only fire special counsel if Trump's request was 'lawful'

"As long as I'm in this position, he's not going to be fired without cause", he added.

He called because "I have been very clear" about Mueller and the lawyers he's hired amounting to a "rigged game", Gingrich said in an interview Tuesday on CBS.

On Monday, a Trump friend, Chris Ruddy, the CEO of Newsmax, suggested that the president was already thinking about "terminating" Mueller from his position as special counsel.

In any case, pushing for Mueller's firing would be a drastic move, given the uproar that followed Trump's firing of then-FBI director James Comey last month.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says he has seen no evidence of good cause to fire the special prosecutor overseeing the Russian Federation investigation. Rosenstein said he has not discussed the appointment of Mueller with Mr. Trump.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein Rosenstein says the attorney general would be the only one who could fire Mueller, and since Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the investigation, Rosenstein is acting in that capacity.

"He apparently couldn't find a single pro-Trump attorney to hire, and I just think that's a rigged game, and I think that it's a mistake to pretend this is going to be some neutral investigation", Gingrich said on CBS This Morning.

"From the people that I've talked to, both Republicans and Democrats, there seems to be a mutual respect", said Walker.

Rosenstein said that if he fired Mueller, he would be required to explain it in writing. Doubt, however, has been cast on that explanation because of cryptic testimony from former FBI Director James Comey last week.

In a freakish, televised cabinet meeting on Monday that forced even non-partisan news agencies such as Reuters and AP to drop their impersonal tone, Trump called on his cabinet members to boost his administration, after claiming that "Never has there been a president, with few exceptions. who has passed more legislation, done more things".

"Chris Ruddy speaks for himself", Spicer said. "I know Bob Mueller. I have confidence in Bob Mueller". During that hearing, Sessions said he had not had any contac with Russian officials - a claim that was later proved untrue, ultimately leading Sessions to recuse himself from all Justice investigations involving the Trump campaign.

They say Mr Trump did not collude with Russian Federation and see the investigation as a politically motivated sham that handicaps Mr Trump's ability to execute his agenda, according to one person who advises the White House on how to handle the probe. Mnuchin: "At times there could be a good shutdown" OPINION: Why Ryan's "ignorance" excuse for Trump won't wash Congress has a pathological spending problem MORE (R-Wis.) on Monday accused the media of ginning up a fake storyline about Trump considering firing Mueller.

But Sessions canceled that appearance, as well as a previously scheduled appearance before a House Appropriations Committee panel, when he made a decision to speak to the Senate Intelligence Committee, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Patrick Leahy say Sessions should be responsible for answering questions in a public hearing about his policies. Justice Department rules prohibit the dismissal of a special counsel without cause. "You are not the witness we were supposed to hear from today".
